Jackie Buyher: The missing teen was found after her mom started a Facebook crusade

As a parent, this stuff always make you sick, but this one has a happier ending than most: Nearly a week after Jackie Buyher, a 16-year-old girl from Evansville, Ind., went missing, she has been found, and her mom has Facebook to thank.

Jackie went missing last Wednesday, and her mom, Rachel, began posting pictures of her daughter on Sunday, along with a plea for help should anyone find Jackie.

In the hours that followed, Rachel received thousands of friend requests, and many people posted Jackie’s photo and her mom’s plea for help on their pages. And on Monday, Jackie was found – police received a tip that she was at a friend’s house, where they picked her up.

Jackie had run away twice before, so clearly there are some problems at home. And her mom does not advocate using Facebook in just any situation. But in this case, it worked – and it’s an interesting lesson in the good social media can do.

What do you think – was this a smart way to find Jackie?

THIS is the stuff that drives me NUTS. Supposedly this woman had reported her daughter missing. However, prior to TODAY there were no news articles and this girl had no official amber alert out for her. I have written an email to the Evansville police department, but have had no response thus far. If she did report this child stolen or missing there would be an amber alert out. I have yet to see ANYTHING from ANY legitimate news source. Nothing but blogs. Also nothing from the police department.

I see so many false reports of missing children on FB that first I check snopes then I check the state where the person is missing from’s amber alert site. I’m glad they found her because honestly I would have blown it off as a hoax because there was nothing to prove it was true. According to your story she’d runaway before which may account for the police not paying attention to her disappearance, it is sad because if something had really happened to her what would the police have done? My heart goes out to the mom, having children of my own and knowing how stressful the teen years can be. Glad FB was able to help the mom when the police apparently didn’t but I can’t blame the police for back burnering the “possible” disappearance.

@ watchman, if a child has run away before they are less apt to put an amber alert out for her you ignorant fool!

Yes, when a child is missing from home be it a run away or suspected abduction, get that child home by any means you can think of ,The Streets are not safe anymore and a Parent, needs to know where their children are Thank Goodness for FACEBOOK AND INSTANT AMBER ALERT, IT WILL CIRCULATE

I didn’t see anything on FB until tonight, like others though if I had seen it earlier on I may have ignored it,because there has been fake postings before………all in all though I’m glad she was found and was unharmed! Now they need to find out why she ran away again!

Hey, Mom! Next time she runs away let the junvenile authorities deal with her or ask the police to issue an Amber Alert. I will follow up on Amber Alerts. I do not usually follow up on a Facebook notice.

To Watchman: Look online and search out the qualifications to be put on an Amber Alert. Not everyone qualifies.
1.Law enforcement must CONFIRM that an abduction has taken place.
2.The child must be at risk of serious injury or death.
3.There must be sufficient descriptive information of child, captor, or captor’s vehicle to issue an alert.
4.The child must be 18 years old or younger.

I JUST THANK GOD SHE IS SAFE AND WAS FOUND. I PRAY GOD TO INTERVENE IN HER LIFE SO SHE WANT DO THIS AGAIN. THIS IS A HORROR FOR A PARENT NOT KNOWING WHERE THEIR CHILD IS NO MATTER IF IT IS A RUNAWAY. GOD WE GIVE YOU GLORY FOR THIS CHILD BEING FOUND AND WE PRAY ALL OTHERS WILL BE FOUND…IN JESUS NAME..AMEN

I say,the mom did the right thing,in considering the “qualifications for an Amber Alert”,not to say an Amber Alert was not needed,it most definitely was needed, but waiting to qualify for it,so many awful things could have happened. I thank God,she first went to Facebook, because EVERYONE and their Grandma and Grandpa,is on Facebook, and the majority if them are Prayer Warriors!! And they/WE take the situation straight to Him,who Knows ALL things!!! So in spite of the reasons for this child leaving home, and yes the reasons
should be taken into considerations after we strike off just plain teen-age rebellion against authority(parents, etc.) and wanting to grow up “too fast”.She can really thank God for her mom,and for the people on Facebook. And I have no doubt one day if she lives long enough to get married(God Willing) and have children of her own,she will also thank Him for her mom,who cared enough to use Facebook and not wait on the Police! As for the Police putting a matter as serious as a child’s life on the “Back-burner”, I consider that Callousness and general disregard, and uncaring for a child,I even consider it Child Neglect and irresponsibility!! And the qualifications for an Amber Alert,I think that is Horrendous and ridiculous!! So there are a lot of hoaxes and people playing games, start charging these people for the hoaxes and their game playing. The people that are playing these games, hold them responsible make them pay for the time and money spent on their games,or send them to JAIL!!! Make it easier for families that need the Amber ALERTS to be able to access this service that is meant to save lives, the lives of ALL CHILDREN!! whether they have runaway or Not!! If they have ruanaway from home I believe it should also be reported to the proper authorities, there is a common law for the parents to use it is a charge for an “Unruly Teenager” when they refuse to live under the Authority of their custodial parents.
This will cause the parents to be held responsible and accountable for whatever problems they are having that need to be reported as far as this child and their children are concerned,by offering help to them concerning whatever problems they are having and especially concerning an “unruly teen”,and it will cause that child to also be held responsible and accountable for their actions!!Whatever the problems may be,this family need some family counseling to investigate why this child has runaway from home more than once. This family and that young girl, was really Blessed by God Almighty that she was found, only GOD KNOWS,what trouble was in her future and she may not have lived to return home!!
I’m sorry I was so long-winded,but I have 6 grandchildren and I pray for them all the time, and I would hate for them to runaway from home and can’t call for an Amber Alert,to possibly save their life! So THank God for everyone on FAcebook, trying to do good for all mankind, especially to save the life of a child or anyone that is in trouble and need life saving HELP!! LORD Jesus HAVE MERCY,when we can’t depend on the authorities or those we look to for Help!!

I know here in the state of South Carolina, there was a young girl that was kidnapped and an amber alert never went out because the police just thought that she ran away. When come to find out they found her she had been raped over and over and it took the quick thinking of the younger to save her life, not the police. So I think us parents have to do what we have to do to protect our children.

I have gone through the same thing. My daughter lived with the mother, grandmother, and now myself. None of us have been able to reign her under control. We live in NJ and the laws here refuse to allow you to parent. My daughter has run away a total of 15 times between the three of us, and because it is now almost a common thing with her there has never been an amber alert, posted in the news, and unless you have information about a missing child the police department just doesn’t give that information out, usually you leave your number and name and a detective gets back to you.
