Middle School Trick Play – Where Is The Line Between Tricking and Cheating?
The video of the Driscoll Middle School running a trick playagainst their rival team may be getting a lot of play on the Internet, but it raises the question of where the line is between a trick play and outright cheating in youth sports. While the trick play is funny to watch, the reality is that one team was taking advantage of the fact that they were playing against other kids. Kids who would question why a player would starting pacing off yardage like a referee. Kids who are busy trying to learn a game and not trying how to get over on their competition.
On the other hand, a team in Connecticut is hot water after they discovered exactly where the line is between trickery and cheating.
The coach of the Manchester football team is accusing the coach of the Southington football team of unethical after their October 22 game. The Manchester coach alleges that one of the team’s wide receivers lost his armband with the team’s coded plays late in the first half. The armband was reportedly picked up by the opposing team and used to their advantage throughout the remainder of the game. The entire incident was allegely captured on the team’s game tape.
“I’m disgusted,” the Manchester coach says of the incident. “It’s very upsetting because what’s the message to our players, that it’s all right to cheat, that there’s no penalty for that?”
Where do you think the line is between trickery and outright cheating?
