Conan Ratings: 3 Reasons Conan O’Brien Won’t Stay On Top
It’s hard not to root for the success of the new Conan O’Brien show on TBS which premiered last night. Everyone loves a good comeback story, and if anyone deserves it, Conan does. After such a public, controversial and humiliating exit after a short stint as host of The Tonight Show, he could easily have walked away with his $30 million and proceeded to relax on a beach somewhere for eternity. But seems he wants to prove something: that he can compete in the late night slot against the powerhouses of Jay Leno and David Letterman. And he did prove that last night by coming in first place. But my guess is he’ll do okay on TBS but taking top slot won’t last long. Here’s why:
1. The reviews are pretty lukewarm, which could hamper new viewers from joining the late night party over at TBS.
2. The reason he got pushed aside by NBC in the first place was lackluster ratings. And that’s when he was just mainly competing against Letterman. Now he’s up against Letterman and Leno. So to think he can consistently beat them both is wishful thinking.
3. Last night’s impressive ratings probably comprised an audience largely composed by the curious viewers who did a drive-by for one night and will never return.
But as I said, he’ll probably hold his own on TBS. Plus, while I’m sure it would be sweet revenge to beat NBC each week, that’s probably not his goal. He seems to love the work and is doing what he loves. Which means he’s already won no matter where he places each week. And that’s something no one (even the suits at NBC) can take away from the funny father of two.
