Miley Cyrus New Video: Should Parents Be Upset?
Is Miley Cyrus' new video too risque?
Miley Cyrus has definitely earned herself a reputation as the girl who can’t be tamed, and she’s proved it even more with the release of her new video, “Who Owns My Heart.”
In the video, Miley prepares to go out for the evening by gyrating on her bed, and then going to a nightclub and dancing with and groping older men. She also caresses herself while on the dance floor.
Her new video is sparking quite a bit of outrage, especially from the Parents Television Council. The president of the council, Tim Winter, issued a statement and said, “It is unfortunate that she would participate in such a sexualized video like this one. It sends messages to her fan base that are diametrically opposed to everything she has done up to this point…Miley built her fame and fortune entirely on the backs of young girls, and it saddens us that she seems so eager to distance herself from that fan base so rapidly.”
I guess the big question is: Should parents be upset about Miley’s risque video?
On the one hand, she’s setting a horrible example for young girls who still look up to her from her Hannah Montana days, but on the other hand, she really isn’t acting any different than other teen pop stars in the past. It’s no secret that sex sells, and one by one, these girls seem to be following suit.
If parents are outraged by her video, then wouldn’t a better solution be to stop their own kids from watching it and quit giving it so much attention? The added spotlight is only making people, especially teens, more and more curious as to what the fuss is all about.

Laura Vivoni commented on Oct 11 10 at 11:35 amI really understand that every artist has the right to do artistically what they want to do, and Miley is growing up and wants to let the world know. On the other hand, I also have the right to control what my child watches and I always monitor her video watching. My DD knows that there are songs that she likes that willl have innapropriate videos and that she cannot watch any video without me watching it first and determining if its ok for her to watch. I say we must start by controlling what we CAN control (what our children watch) instead of arguing about whats out of our control (Mileys choice of video)

I think what bothers me is that a man is trying to dictate the direction of her career. Should she be a little girl forever? If parents are so outraged, maybe they should take the time to explain their outrage to their kids instead of the media.
