Five Things About Dorothy Dandridge
Who can forget Halle Berry’s role as iconic actress, Dorothy Dandridge, in HBO’s “Introducing Dorothy Dandridge?” Dandridge was the first African American to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress, and Berry did a beautiful job of portraying her life story.
Dorothy worked as an actress in Hollywood during a truly glamorous time, but it was also a very difficult period for her because of segregation. I will never forget the scene in “Introducing Dorothy Dandridge” where she sticks her toe into the hotel pool and the staff winds up draining it as a result. I can’t even imagine what that must have been like for her.
In addition to earning a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, here are five other things you may not know about Dorothy Dandridge:
1. Dorothy was a mother, and had one child, Harolyn Suzanne Nicholas in 1943, with husband Harold Nicholas.
2. In addition to acting, she was also a singer, and performed at popular venues such as The Cotton Club and The Apollo Theater.
3. Dorothy began performing at a young age with her sister, and their mother made them into an act called “The Wonder Kids”, after which they were eventually renamed “The Dandridge Sisters.”
4. Her most well known acting performance is probably for Carmen Jones, though her singing voice was dubbed in the film by Marilyn Horne, and opera singer.
5. Dorothy passed away in 1965 at the young age of 42 of an accidental drug overdose.
