Lee Westwood: 10 Things About This Golfer, Father & Ryder Cup Leader
Lee Westwood is on a role. The father, educator and golfer is leading the Ryder Cup. Lee along with Luke Donald earned Europe it’s first point on day three of the Ryder Cup outplaying the U.S. team of Tiger Wood and Steve Stricker. Woods does not do well when playing against Lee at the Ryder Cup, this is the sixth time in seven Ryder Cup matches that Westwood has bested Tiger Wood. So who is Lee Westwood? Here are 10 things about the Ryder Cup superstar.
Lee Westwood doesn’t just love the game of golf, but he married into it as well. In 1999 he wed Laurae Coltart, the sister of Scottish Ryder Cup player Andrew Coltart.
Lee and Laurae have two children, Samuel Bevan who was born in 2001 and Poppy Grave who was born in 2004.
Opting to spend time with his family, he took a “significant break” from the game after the birth of his son Samuel.
One of his very good friends is fellow Ryder Cup super star Darren Clarke, along with hanging out they also own a private jet together.
He has an honorary degree of Doctor of Science from the Nottingham Trent University.
Just a couple months ago, in August, Lee opened his first golf school called the Lee Westwood Academy. This will be the first of several day academies that will train young golfers the art of the game. The school focuses on practical golf training and sports study.
He is one of the very few golfers that has won tournaments on every major continent. He’s also been the leader on the European Tour and the PGA Tour.
Lee was named the Player of the Year in 1998, 2000 and 2009.
He has had many appearances at the Ryder Cup, he has represented Europe in the last six Ryder Cups.
Lee started played golf at the age of 13 when his grandparents bought him a set of clubs.
