This is a terrible tragedy, but if anything good is to come of it, it opens the doors to talk to your kids about drugs.

Illegal drugs are not the only problems kids have with substance abuse. The abuse of prescription drugs has been on the rise in the U.S. for the past few years, particularly among teenagers. Sometimes without knowing it parents can play a part because they have had a hand in obtaining the prescription. Kids may think that because a doctor has given them the pills and because mom and dad know they are taking them, the pills are safe. Be sure you talk to them about the dangers and what is the proper use and what is not. Also be on the look out for any changes in behavior or something that seems like a dependency.
