New American Idol rules await this season's contestants
With the announcement of new American Idol judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez, come some game changing new American Idol rules.
Or at least some changes to the stale American Idol format.
So, what’s in store for season 10, besides new American Idol judges?
There will no longer be themes based on genre, rather they will be singing songs from different decades each week. This eliminates contestants trying to perform in genres they are uncomfortable with, as producer Nigel Lythgoe comments, “It’s really important to develop what they are good at.”
A new in-house mentor, Universal Music Group’s Jimmy Iovine, will help the American Idol contestants each week, with music producers brought in for coaching – Idol will get rid of the celebrity guest mentors.
The point of Idol now is to see improvements in each week’s performances, “developing the young artists the way they would anyone who signs with the label.”
There may be guest judges, but nothing is set in stone.
There may be new rules about contestants playing instruments, since they don’t want performers to hide behind a guitar or piano.
Overall, Lythgoe wants to focus on the talent competition that American Idol used to be, saying, “We have got to go back to creating American Idols.”
