Sacha Baron Cohen as Freddie Mercury: Can the Celeb Dad Pull Off Queen Front Man?
Sacha Baron Cohen as Freddie Mercury in an upcoming Queen biopic – best casting ever? I’d say yes, and I know I’m not alone. Sacha Baron Cohen is ripe to play Queen front man Mercury – he’s got the look, he’s got the talent, he’s got the pipes.
He’ll be brilliant as Freddie Mercury, and I can never wait to hear what Sacha Baron Cohen’s next project will be. From comedic nemesis in Talladega Nights to Borat, Baron Cohen never disappoints (although, in the case of Borat, he does shock a bit!). Not to mention a terrific story in Freddie Mercury – seeing his story come to life on the big screen will be of interest to Queen fans and non-fans alike. The film will look at the band’s early years, through to their performance at Live Aid in 1985. Freddie Mercury’s last days will not be included in the film – he died of complications from AIDS in 1991.
GK Films partner Graham King commented in a statement: “Queen is one of the greatest rock bands of all time, and a music brand all unto itself. Freddie Mercury was an awe-inspiring performer, so with Sacha in the starring role coupled with Peter’s [Morgan] screenplay and the support of Queen, we have the perfect combination to tell the real story behind their success.”
In real life, Sacha Baron Cohen is married to actress Isla Fisher and the couple have two children together.
Do you think Sacha Baron Cohen can play Freddie Mercury? Do you think he’ll sing or lip sync the late, great Queen singer’s songs?
Don’t forget the bang up job that Sacha Baron Cohen did in Sweeney Todd – I’ve included a clip of Baron Cohen’s singing talents below:
