Lady Gaga Explains The Meat Dress: Was It Actually a Good Example For Kids?
Lady Gaga dons a meat dress during the MTV VMAs.
It’s difficult, at this point, for Lady Gaga to shock us with her wardrobe choices. But the singer nonetheless managed to take more than a few people by surprise last night at the MTV Video Music Awards when she stepped out donning a dress (and headpiece) made of meat. And this time, it wasn’t just pure shock–there was some anger that resulted from her choice, too.
PETA, for one, was outraged by the outfit. “Lately, Lady Gaga has been having a hard time keeping her act ‘over the top,’” said PETA president Ingrid E. Newkirk. “Wearing a dress made out of cuts of dead cows is offensive enough to bring comment, but someone should whisper in her ear that there are more people who are upset by butchery than who are impressed by it.”
Following the VMAs, Gaga joined Ellen DeGeneres–a vegan herself–to explain the meat-dress, and apologize for it as well. “Well, it is certainly no disrespect to anyone that is vegan or vegetarian,” Gaga told DeGeneres. “As you know, I am the most judgement free human being on the earth. However, it has many interpretations, but for me this evening, if we don’t stand up for what we believe in and if we don’t fight for our rights, pretty soon we’re going to have as much rights as the meat on our bones. And, I am not a piece of meat.”
Could it be that Gaga’s controversial wardrobe choice–and her explanation of it following the debut–makes her a good example for kids? The oft-outrageous singer makes such a public showing of not being judgmental, and furthermore, being open-minded to just about everything. Do you think Gaga could actually teach your kids a lesson?
