Kanye West VMA 2010: He tweeted he wanted to make his mom proud.

Kanye West’s VMA 2010 experience boiled down to one thing: Did he redeem himself? The answer, surprisingly enough, seems to be yes. Kanye West’s new song displayed uncharacteristic humility as he looked for forgiveness from Taylor Swift, whose acceptance speech he so rudely interrupted at last year’s VMAs, and attempted to redeem for his mother, who passed away three years ago but who was a huge influence in his life.

Before the show, West tweeted, “I wish my Mom was here but I know she’s looking down. I want to make her so happy today.”

And Kanye West’s “Runaway” lyrics carried a message that would make any parent proud. The usually egotistical rapper owned up to his mistakes and apologized again to Swift, who debuted her own new song that seemed to forgive if not forget.

Here’s a sample of “Runaway;” decide for yourself if West succeeded in his quest:

I’m so gifted at finding at what I don’t like the most

So I think that it’s time for us to have a toast

Let’s have a toast for the d—– bags

Let’s have a toast for the a—holes

Let’s have a toast for the scumbags

Every one of them that I know
