Out of curiosity I showed my four-year-old daughter an image of Lady Gaga ensconced in raw meat, formed into a party dress. Her reaction? She loved it. She thought it was gorgeous. When I told her it was meat, she chuckled but wasn’t shocked at all. It was as if I told her it was made from remnants found at Joanne’s Fabrics.

I asked her if she would wear Lady Gaga’s Meat Dress,  thankfully, she said she would not replying that, “it would be too slimy, I’d have to take a bath after wearing it,” an apt observation. She added that it looked kind of like salami and that “if she licked that dress, it would be delicious.” I don’t know about delicious, but here are five other facts about the fantastic and freaky frock.

1) It was designed by Franc Fernandez, he told MTV that, “I was contacted by her stylist, Nicola Formichetti, and they had already shot the picture with Terry Richardson in the meat bikini for Vogue Hommes Japan. They told me that they wanted to make a main dress [out of meat], so I did it.”

2) The designer wasn’t sure what kind of meat it was, saying, “I don’t know what it’s called in English, but in Argentina, it’s called matambre. I went to my butcher to get it, in Los Angeles in the valley. He’s the butcher that my family goes to. I’m trying to get him a signed picture of it.”

3) Fernandez bought 50 pounds of meat for the dress, but didn’t use it all, he just wanted to make sure he had enough. He said that, “It was fairly heavy. She said it was the most comfortable dress of the night, though. I’m guessing it weighed around forty pounds. It’s built on a corset, so the weight is distributed on her chest, so it’s not like it’s hanging off her neck.”

4) The designer said the meat was clean, strong and very sturdy so it didn’t leave a bloody trail. And he added that, “”Gaga said it smelled good. It had a sweet smell. It hadn’t been sitting out for more than five hours. And it’s not a heavy gross meat.”

5) While he worked on the dress, it had to be kept refriderated. It took him about two days on and off to work on it. And yes, the dress will “go bad” saying that “it shouldn’t be worn again.”
