In the Midst of Cancer Struggle, Michael Douglas Talks Fatherhood Regrets
Michael Douglas, who is experiencing a very public battle with stage-four throat cancer, has some other troubles on his mind, too. The actor spoke with Men’s Journal shortly before he announced his sickness and revealed his regrets about fatherhood–mainly that he put his career before his son, Cameron, who was sentenced to five years in prison earlier this year for drug charges.
“My career was really just getting started and that was my focus, maybe more than it should have been,” Douglas said. “I was gone more than I should have been.” Now, the actor is belatedly concerned about Cameron and his recent legal problems and jail time–which Douglas called “adequate” at the time of sentencing.
“I just want to talk to him about what he’s going to accomplish there besides working out and playing on the softball team,” Douglas said. “What tools is he going to be able to work on?”
Douglas will undergo eight weeks of radiation and chemotherapy to treat his throat cancer, and will hopefully successfully recover and be able to make up for some lost time with his son.
