ALO 097048 211x300 Video: The Story of Aron Ralston, Told Through James Franco and Danny BoyleActor James Franco is starring in a new movie, which tells the story of climber Aron Ralston–and what he did to save himself. The movie, 127 Hours, directed by Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle has been chosen to be the closing film at the London film festival this year.

It’s a true story based on Aron Ralston, who shot to fame in 2003 after a harrowing journey in the western mountains. Ralston, who detailed his experience in Between a Rock and a Hard Place, suffered when his arm was trapped under a boulder for, yes, 127 hours–or five days. But rather than giving up, this new dad (he welcomed his first child this year) amputated his own arm using nothing but a blunt knife and some pliers. “It may not be pretty,” Ralston said. “But surviving is grit and determination in its highest form.”

The film festival’s artistic director, Sandra Hebron, noted that Slumdog Millionaire was the closing film in 2008, and it’s highly unusual–and unprecedented–for a film by the same director to be chosen again for that slot. “But 127 Hours was the obvious choice for us–with film-making as bold and adventurous as its subject matter, it confirms Danny Boyle as one of the world’s finest and most visionary directors,” she said.

We can only imagine the level of courage Ralston will pass on to his child. Will you go see this movie? View the trailer after the jump.
