Miss Universe Q & A: Was Miss Philippines Questions Fair? Her Answer That Bad? No.

Posted by maralee on August 24th, 2010 at 12:15 pm

photo cron 1 65 6 2010 199x300 Miss Universe Q & A: Was Miss Philippines Questions Fair? Her Answer That Bad? No.There was a big upset during last night’s Miss Universe 2010 when Miss Mexico,  Jimena Navarrete, won the crown over Miss Philippines, Maria Venus Raj. The competition was close, but many feel that Venus lost during the Q & A portion. But was her question even fair? And did she really answer that poorly? I don’t think so.

Miss Mexico’s was asked by Olympic gold-medal figure skater Evan Lysacek how she felt about unsupervised Internet use. “I do believe that Internet is an indispensable, necessary tool for the present time,” she said through an interpreter. “We must be sure to teach them the values that we learned as a family.”

And she’s right. But this question is about a specific cultural topic. It’s an issue on which she should have an opinion. Maria’s question however, was based upon something personal.

William Baldwin (Which, um what? Still waiting for someone to explain why he was there. Was Alec caught in traffic?) asked her, “What is one big mistake that you have made in your life and what did you do to make it right?”

This is  straight from a game of Truth or Dare. Her answer was that she has no regrets because she has never “done anything major, major, I mean problem, that I have done in my life.”

People have said that this was a horrible answer, but what could she have said without divulging something that would have put her in a negative light. “There was this one time in college when…” or “I took too many drugs..” or “I accidentally ran over a small child.” I would hope she hasn’t done any of these things, but the point is that William asked her to divulge something very personal on the public stage.

How is her answer, that she was raised within a stable family with good values and managed to stay on the straight and narrow, wrong? If she had given an example wouldn’t that be rewarding her for a major, major mistake, which she clearly felt was the question. There is a language barrier here that she was dealing with.

When compared to Miss Mexico’s question, based on an actual issue, asking Miss Philippines something personal and not solely based on opinion seems unfair.

Miss Universe Q & A: Was Miss Philippines Questions Fair? Her Answer That Bad? No.

I absolutely agree; I was thinking the exact same thing. It really was a “bad” question for two reasons…As you mentioned, everyone else received a “what is your position on this topic” question. Miss Phillipines was put between a rock and a hard spot. There was really no good way to answer the question…I can’t believe there was no one to review the panel questions beforehand and notice the qualitative difference between them.

Lorin commented on Aug 24 10 at 12:38 pm

Her answer to the question is very typical of a filipina – answering in English with a tagalog accent. She should have trained in the call center before she competed. It’s a bit disappointing since we have all the resources here in the Philippines to help her in the competition specially during the final interview. Her answer to the question should have been “Problems arise because of the wrong choices and the mistakes that we do in our lives. As a 22 year old Filipina, I haven’t had any major mistakes in my life. I am not sure if I am supposed to be happy with that but growing up without knowing my father and being poor made me very focused of what I want to become. I am not saying that I am perfect but what I’m trying to say is that mistakes are a part of life. All of us make it in one way or another. Without it, we will never know what is right. What is important is that we know how to forgive and forget, love again and in the end become better individuals.”

ditto

celestial9513 commented on Aug 24 10 at 1:33 pm

I meant ditto to Lorin . Anton’s answer is interesting , however did the other contestants answer in perfect English ? Or through a translator ?

celestial9513 commented on Aug 24 10 at 1:37 pm

Hey Anton, your answer to that question was perfect you should have coached Miss Phillippines before she took that question

Beau Toichi commented on Aug 24 10 at 1:43 pm

Well, now that she made the biggest mistake of her life last night, I wonder how she would answer that question now.

Sugar commented on Aug 24 10 at 3:16 pm

Thank you Beau. I believe that Miss Philippines needs more coaching with listening and answering questions effectively from an american. Call centers here in Manila do this all the time. Trainers in call centers are excellent. Why are we not utilizing them? Miss Philippines already has the looks but she lacks more training in effective communication (although i believe she is a communication graduate). When the question was asked, she answered it immediately without taking a pause and analyzing about what better things to say. She got overwhelmed. A situation like this calls for what we say “beauty under pressure.” That could have been her opportunity to exemplify such attitude. That i think is her biggest mistake so far in her life. She could have won as Miss Universe.

Anton commented on Aug 24 10 at 3:42 pm

Hey ATON: Easier typed then done.. Try answering a difficult question in front of millions under extreme pressure & not @ home alone in your room.

Paul commented on Aug 24 10 at 4:11 pm

hey Anton, is it a requirement to answer the questions in straight English? I don’t think so. You’re over-confident with your English. Stop criticizing her. I bet you won’t even stand a chance if you were to compete with Ms. Raj in a beauty contest. And you have no right to say if that was the biggest mistake in her life unless you’ve been with her since she was just a baby.

I agree with Lorin. The question was indeed unfair and too personal.

tyler commented on Aug 24 10 at 5:30 pm

I, too, agree that the question Philippines unluckily picked was unfair. All the other questions were based on personal OPINIONS – which everyone has, whereas the one Philippines chose was based on a personal EXPERIENCE. The question was, “What is one big mistake that you have made in your life and what did you do to make it right?” Already nervous, great fear of saying the wrong thing, and loaded with the pressure to impress, what can one possibly answer that would not ruin one’s reputation? Not to mention, she only had so long to respond to the question as well. I honestly believe that had the other 4 contestants chosen that question, they, too, would not have stuttered, not answered it properly or would’ve lied for sake of saving their reputations and answering the question in a timely manner. It definitely is hard to spontaneously turn a mistake into a positive experience. I thought of some answers she could’ve given, and none would’ve given her a positive impression. Had she picked the other questions (i.e., what does she think of the death penalty, what she thinks about x-ray screening at the airports, what she feels is the effect of the internet on youth, what’s her opinion on the government controlling dress codes), I’m sure she would’ve given a good answer and would’ve wound up winning the contest. If anything, based on the answers to the questions, I believe Jamaica’s answer was the best and do not understand why the crown was given to Mexico instead.

The judges should get together and make sure their questions are fair and consistent!!! I honestly think there should be a rematch!!

Lisa commented on Aug 24 10 at 10:41 pm

hey anton, you were able to constract your answer to the question because you are not in the situation of “grace under pressure” I agree with Lorin too!

hildzz commented on Aug 24 10 at 11:38 pm

Hey anton, Venus raj is not a call center agent… Pls understand that she’s infront of millions of people and the pressure is pretty much extreme…

Mary commented on Aug 24 10 at 11:38 pm

I actually agree with what tyler and paul said.. you are OC, huh?!? Bakla k b? try to think this way, why Ms mexico and other contestants got their own interpreter? Why should we given our own interpreter? Anyway, English is not our primary language.. gets?

Mary commented on Aug 24 10 at 11:41 pm

I agreed w/ Lorin, the question is kinda personal. And she’s only 22, and the question is a “MAJOR PROBLEM” . Her and english accent has nothing to do her answer.

myla commented on Aug 25 10 at 12:41 am

Unfair? Too personal? Welcome to the Miss Universe pagaent. This isn’t some pagaent to see who is the prettiest in a barangay, this is IT. It’s going to be tough. To answer, in effect, “I have no big mistakes” is an arrogant answer.

James commented on Aug 25 10 at 1:50 am

Oh cmon. She lost because of the “major major problem.” what was that? “bongang bongang problem?” – a gay lingo? who is her communication coach? she answered the question like it was a local barangay beauty pageant. she represents the country of english speaking people. can she not do better than that? cmon! stop depending her poor answer. it was the worst among the top 5. and please dont blame the judges about their questions. they are there for a reason. and besides we don’t have any control about whichever the judge the MUO will choose and whatever questions they will ask. what we have control of is to train our representative to speak better. i admire venus about her life history, her physical look, the way she walks in the catwalk and her appeal. i am just not sold out with her answers.

Biyotch commented on Aug 25 10 at 1:56 am

hahahaha! i agree. it was a major major disaster!

I totally agree with the writer—the question was a catch 22-type situation for Miss Philippines. An honest answer no matter how trivial could have given her a negative image to the audience ruining her chances to win it. She never stood a chance whichever way she answered— that kind of question tends to expose a dark side to her being.

mitalex commented on Aug 25 10 at 2:43 am

anton: It’s nice answer. had we known that William Baldwin would ask a self incrimination question like that, we would have asked Venus to memorize your answer. it’s quite different just typing your answer here than talking in front of the world.

LirU commented on Aug 25 10 at 2:58 am

that’s incriminating sorry.

LirU commented on Aug 25 10 at 2:59 am

Probably she’s not bitter that she didn’t know her father and that they are poor. It’s really a matter of perspective. Not knowing your father and being poor is not your mistake in the first place. I mean, If she really believe that she didn’t have any big mistake that she should be guilty about, maybe she’s right. It’s like asking a suspect did you do or not. It’s a simple yes or no answer. If your answer is Yes, you can explain further. If your No, that’s it, you can’t squeeze anything from that. Well, it’s a tough question in the first place i should say.

Jigs commented on Aug 25 10 at 6:43 am

hey guys,is it wrong to talk english in Filipino accent?after all candidates should showcase their own country they’re representing ,isnt it?we should be proud of her instead….atleast she made it to top 5…

flor commented on Aug 25 10 at 10:33 am

In my university, we also have a beauty pageant. we even have a pre-pageant that showcase the candidates intelligence from delivering a speech and from answering random questions from the audience. our candidates representing from different colleges answers better than her. her poor answer shouldn’t be an excuse. and my goodness! she is cum laude graduate with a communication degree. isn’t that a shame? what happened to her all boils down to the educational standard of her schooling. but anyway, looking at the bright side, she did a great job having reached the top 5. it’s just that she could have done better and i know she can given enough time.

buelo commented on Aug 25 10 at 1:13 pm

i agree, the binibining pilipinas organization should have trained their candidates well. they should give ample time in training these candidates so they will have big chances of winning. not just with the catwalk (they have done that so many times already the first they join a pageant in their hometowns) but with effective communication. i agree with anton. she should have emmersed herself in a call center even for just a month. call centers are playgrounds where you can practice good communication with real people in the western part of the globe. if only she did that, she would have sounded the best in the final interview because she already got used to it.

tootsie commented on Aug 25 10 at 1:23 pm

@ buelo : you keep on crticizing venus’ english skills when you yourself isnt all that good in written eglish. LMAO

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU LORIN! It was not fair at all for Miss Philippines. Not by a long shot.

Tamaha_03 commented on Aug 25 10 at 3:40 pm

It’s sad to note that Miss Philippines’ harshest critics are her own kababayans when we should all be rallying behind her for achieving what many have failed to do. We should be proud that she was the ONLY Asian to reach the final five_and ALMOST won the title…except for that darn question.
Venus deserves a little more respect and understanding, Period.

mitalex commented on Aug 25 10 at 7:50 pm

We agree, we should be proud of her..

Tony and Ellen commented on Aug 25 10 at 11:11 pm

The question for her wasn’t fair. Its a question that needs so much time and reflection to have a good answer. The question was too personal totally different from social issue questions for other candidates. Unless one is prepared for that question which is no longer an impromptu answer or the candidate is a whore then she can make a quick answer. :)) That question was made to defeat a candidate. I wonder how would the other 4 contestants answer when they have that question. :) Watch abcnews and find out how Bush, Obama and CEOs couldn’t make an answer.

melchizedic commented on Aug 26 10 at 9:50 am

Regardless of all the critisms, We should all be proud of her for making it that far. The question was too personal! I bet if the other contestants have to answer this question, they would have a hard time answering it. I think all the finalists should have the same question and the judges would know who gave the best answer!

piglet202 commented on Aug 26 10 at 10:58 am

In the past Miss Universe, the questions were asked by the emcee
Bob Barker. I think the way they ask the questions at the present time can cause bias among the judges. Why I say that is because the contestant picks the name of the judge instead of the question.
In my opinion they already had Miss Mexico in mind to win the crown.

cuchi-cuchi commented on Aug 26 10 at 6:06 pm

I believe that Venus’ answer was heart-felt and relatively good. She just failed to express it well and add supporting sentences.

I think a better answer would be: “That’s a hard question to answer in 30 seconds Sir. It requires a long time of reflection and looking back at the past 22 years of my life. However if I am going to answer that in the context of Filipino culture where a big mistake for a 22-year old woman is not finishing school, being pregnant outside of marriage, going inot drugs and prostitution then I would say that I haven’t done any big, major major mistake in my life. With the love of my family and friends, I am living a great and perfect life.

:)

Mike commented on Aug 26 10 at 9:40 pm

mexican mafiosi! regardless of who the judge she may have picked, the same question was already reserved for her! poor venus….another victim of a pre selected winner…even before the pageant started!

Leo commented on Aug 27 10 at 12:06 am

Yes, in fairness to the contestants, the judges’ questions should have been screened beforehand for possible bias. Perhaps the same question should have been asked of the five finalists. This was done in past beauty contests. English is an international language with variant accents. We all have accents.

Renato Aoanan commented on Aug 27 10 at 12:29 am

1.The Answer and Question was not fair for all candidates as there are global issues ask and there are personal issues ask. Some question is heavier than the other. There should have been only one question for all the candidates, let the judges decide who made the best answer.
2.Candidates who has interpreter must answer the question in one full complete answer/sentence instead of making answer-pause after answer-pause or giving initial after initial answer to the interpreter like what Miss Mexico did. Everytime the interpreter talks having his interpretation, this gives time for the candidate to think and add her initial answer. This betrays the importance of impromptu answer.
3. Some candidates can understand English but couldn’t speak English well. From the time a judge ask his/her question to the candidate, to the time the interpreter translate the question, this gives long time for a candidate to think and reason before she answers. This is not fair for those English speaking candidates. It would be fair if the a.)judge give his/her written question to the interpreter.b.) The interpreter ask the question to the contestant in her language, c.) the candidate answers while the question in English is flash/shown at the widescreen at her back, d.) the interpreter interprets her answer in English.

First of all, I am happy for Ms. Philippines and proud she made it to the top 5.

It’s impossible for a person to have not done any major mistake in their life. However little it is, if it is the BIGGEST one you did then you have committed a major major mistake. I might not be major to other people but it is to u..

RATED commented on Aug 27 10 at 12:46 pm

All, I can say is that she messed up. It does not matter what question they ask you, if you do not have an answer that means you are not ready or should not be there at all. The comments I have read that it was not fair., it is because the person or persons the puts these comments are all philipinos or married to an philipino or philipina and they are defending her. Most philipino speak good English and there was no reason for her to have an interpreter. Miss Philippines came from the country side of the phillipines and looks are not everything. When I saw her on TV the next day you she said that she does not care what people say. To protect herside your should of opologize not say that she does not care. When I heard the words from your mouth saying that she does not care what people say I notice all she wants is publicity and that is wrong with being on TV and everybody see her actitude.

james commented on Aug 27 10 at 5:54 pm

she messed up period

buelo:

go to school you fucking idiot. a university pageant is different from an international pageant. it is hard to concentrate while on stage especially when the whole fucking world is watching.

and anton.. how long did that fucking took you to write down? 1 hour? she only had like 1 minute to answer the question and 2 seconds to think about her answer. asshole.

i am colombian and i love miss mexico but ughhh miss jamaica and miss philippines were way better than miss mexico.
