miss universe Miss Universe 2010 Doh! Venus Raj Totally Got Answer Wrong. Why? (VIDEO)

It came down to one question. The final moment and deciding factor of who would be named Miss Universe. And Venus Raj? She blew it.

The judge asked Taj, “What is the biggest mistake that you’ve ever made in your life and what did you do to make it right?” That’s a tough one. Most would probably not want to answer that one honestly, like “the time I did 15 shots of Jager and woke up wearing only a tutu in a bar bathroom,” or “when I killed a man, just to watch him die,” well that wouldn’t really fly now would it?  But Miss Universe contestants aren’t those kind of people anyways. Raj’s reply? Pretty boring…and well, odd. She said:

“Thank you so much sir for that wonderful question.  Good evening ladies and gentlemen.  Good evening Las Vegas!  You know what sir in my 22 years of existence I can say there is nothing major, I mean problem that I have done in my life because I am very confident with my family with the love that they are giving to me.  So thank you so much that I am here!”

Those questions are meant to catch people off guard, especially in that nerve racking venue. These final questions are a test to see how quickly you can think on your feet. One issue for these international beauties is the language, since the show is based in English. But even with not having anything “major,” she could have come up with at least something like, ‘being Miss Philippines has kept me busy and away from my family, who I miss and I wish I could have seen more.” Or something that would have won her charity points by saying, ‘I wish I got involved with charitable causes and helping the people of the Philippines earlier in my life, I think I could have done lots of good.’

But I’m not the only one thinking about coulda, shoulda, woulda. You know Raj is probably replaying her answer over and over and over in her head and it’s is keeping her up at night, knowing that her one simple answer is what kept her from world domination!

Do you think her answer is what kept her from the crown?

MISS PHILIPPINES – VENUS RAJ GAVE AN HONEST ANSWER AND IT COSTS HER THE CROWN
Let me enlighten you as to why?
Venus Raj lives a simple and poor life. She lives in a province, sort of your rural America or the boonies. The house she lives in is a simple thatched-roof hut made of bamboo and wood, located in the middle of the rice paddies. Her immediate support are her family, friends, and relatives. She was born illegitimate. In the Philippine society, it is still a stigma. She strives to do her best to study hard and succeed in life. She graduated Cum Laude in Communication Arts and managed to find a job as Information Assistant in a governmental agency in her province. While doing that, she helps her mother, a farmer, buys land on installment basis. Her goal is to help her mother and family improve the quality of their lives and lift from the life of poverty.
Going back to the question posed by Mr. Baldwin, “what is the one big mistake that you did in your life, and what did you do to make it right?”
When Venus answered, “In my 22 years of existence, there is nothing major – major problem that I have done in my life. Because I’m very confident about my family and the love they are giving me. So thank you so much…”
IF YOU ANALYZE HER ANSWER, SHE IS TELLING THE AUDIENCE THE TRUTH!
In her 22 years of life, she did not commit a ONE BIG MISTAKE WORTH UNDOING OR REPENTING! SHE THANKS HER FAMILY BECAUSE THEY ARE HER GUIDE AND SUPPORT.
Let’s see…where could she make a big mistake?
DID SHE SLEEP AROUND AND CATCH HIV/STD DISEASES? – No, she did not. Remember, she lives in a rural area in a conservative Catholic society, acting whorish is a big NO NO!
DID SHE GET PREGNANT AND HAVE AN ABORTION? – NO, she did not. She is one wholesome girl. Her family watched, protected, and nurtured her. She can’t escape the watchful eyes of her 4 brothers. Suitors will have a hard time to be near her. If there is going to be one, he will be talking to the whole family instead of talking privately with her. That’s the way life in rural Philippines. Everybody knows everybody, and everybody knows what everybody is doing.
DID SHE SMOKE OR DID DRUGS? – NO, she did not. She came from a poor family. She has no means of buying it. These bad habits are only enjoyed by the wretched people, who are typically shunned by Philippine conservative society.
DID SHE FAIL IN SCHOOL? – No, she did not. She excelled in school. Graduated Cum Laude.
DID SHE COVET A MARRIED MAN? – No, she did not. She doesn’t have a boyfriend at the present time.
IS SHE A BAD DAUGHTER? – No, she is not. In fact, she helps her mother and family improve their lives.
OVERALL, VENUS IS A WHOLESOME, GOOD GIRL, WHO GREW UP IN A RURAL CONSERVATIVE SOCIETY, PROTECTED, NURTURED, AND WATCHED BY HER LOVE ONES AND DID NOT EXPERIENCE BIG MISTAKES IN LIFE. SHE LEAD A CAREFUL AND NORMAL LIFE THAT IS TOTALLY OPPOSITE OF WHAT YOU EXPECT OF A LIFE OF A YOUNG LADY IN THE MODERN WESTERN SOCIETY.
SHE WAS JUDGED BY A PANEL OF MODERN SOCIETY JUDGES AND AUDIENCES WHO CAN’T BELIEVE WHAT THEY WERE HEARING. TRUTH IS INDEED STRANGER THAT FICTION. BUT JUDGES SHOULD ALSO LOOK AT FACTS AND TRUTHS, NOT SOME GENERALIZED OPINION THAT SOUNDS GOOD TO THE POLITICALLY CORRECT. VENUS ANSWER WAS FACTUAL AND BRAVE, AND SHE SHOULDN’T BE LAMBASTED FOR TELLING THE TRUTH, AND IT SHOULDN’T COST HER THE CROWN.
VENUS BEING COMING FROM A POOR EXISTENCE AND MAKING IT INTO THE WORLD SHOULD HAVE BEEN A GREAT ROLE MODEL FOR PEOPLE LIVING AND BORN INTO POVERTY, WHICH APTLY APPLIES TO THE 70% OF THE WORLD POPULATION, AND FOR THOSE BORN OUT OF WEDLOCK. SHE CAN BE A GREAT MESSENGER TO THE WORLD THAT:
1. THERE IS NOTHING TO BE ASHAMED OF BEING BORN OF OUT WEDLOCK. IT IS NOT THE END OF THE WORLD. LIFE OFFERS REDEMPTION AND MANY POSSIBILITIES.
2. BEING POOR IS NOT A HINDRANCE TO SUCCEED IN LIFE.
3. STRESS THE IMPORTANCE OF EDUCATION AND OF FINISHING COLLEGE.
4. HIGHLIGHT THE IMPORTANCE OF MORAL CHARACTER AND A GIRL’S WHOLESOME IMAGE
5. FAITH OF A CREATOR WITH UNLIMITED GIFTS TO THOSE WHO BELIEVE ~NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE WITH GOD. HE CAN USE A MESSENGER FROM THE LOWLY AND POOR AND EXALT HER TO NEW HEIGHTS. SHE CAN BE A LIVING TESTAMENT OF GOD’S GRACE AND POWER THAT HE CAN DO ANYTHING AND CAN CHANGE LIVES.
6. GREAT ROLE MODEL FOR YOUNG GIRLS ~BE VIRTUOUS~BE HONEST ~HONOR THE PARENTS~EXCEL IN SCHOOL~HELPS FAMILY, ETC.

WHERE CAN YOU FIND A RARE AND SPECIAL GIRL LIKE VENUS RAJ?
MR. TRUMP AND THE PANEL OF JUDGES FAILED TO DO THEIR DUE DILIGENCE. THEY FAILED TO DO THEIR JOB AND IN FAILING TO DO THEIR JOB, THEY MISSED THIS ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY FOR A GREAT MESSENGER TO THE WORLD, WHO IS CONVINCINGLY BELIEVABLE TO THE WORLD, BECAUSE SHE IS A LIVING AND BREATHING PROOF OF OVERCOMING HARDSHIPS, OBSTACLE S, AND CHALLENGES IN LIFE. JUST LOOK AT HER LIFE … AND HOW FAR SHE GOES.

Let’s just be happy that she got that far. At least she shed some light on the Philippines. Miss Universe is just one year, but everything she learned as an individual since her crown was taken away will last a lifetime that will make her stronger. Let’s just be proud of her accomplishment, and we must understand she endured and overcame many challenges in her life.

YES! TOTALLY!

PAGING MS. STELLA MARQUEZ ARANETA: Do something about your screening process. SCREEN your candidates PROPERLY AND WISELY. Your organization Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Inc. has indirectly caused the country shame because of fielding “nothing-between-her-ears” candidates. PURO PALAKASAN KAYO. MAG RESIGN KA NA!!! YOU STINK!!!

ernesto sanchez commented on Aug 24 10 at 9:01 pm

Very well said elle27! And to this dude Ernesto Sanchez, did you even read the preceding comment(s)?

Kalista commented on Aug 24 10 at 10:02 pm

TO ELLE:Kudos aptly said. She did well, and while her answer, for some, is way off mark, lots of credits should be given to her for getting as far as she did and giving a good fight which many of her predecessors, despite their fabled WITS and SMARTS failed to do. Why? Because they tend to sit and rely merely on their so-called superior BRAINS.

To ERNESTO: You have a point. Something should be done to the screening process. Remember, Venus was dethroned for irrelevant reasons. BPCI have rules that are irrelevant and that needs to be updated as the international standards have changed. Lest they realize that, they should give up holding the franchise.

That was a truly enlightening post Ms Elle. And I agree with you. When I look at her life and see how she has has remained a decent soul and kept a positive outlook despite what her family and herself had gone through, I think she gave an answer completely based on personal honesty and integrity. She could have made up something in her head to make her answer sound more ‘dramatic’ and ‘earth shaking’ but she she didn’t. In her mind, no obstacle (even if one was born out of wedlock, or was too poor to get into a a fancy-schmancy school or is bi-racial and not be acknowledged by your father) is too big that she would dwell on it for the rest of her life and hate the goddam world for having to bear those ‘MISTAKES / PROBLEMS’ on her skinny shoulders. So did she get the answer wrong? Nopes. I think you just (completely) missed (the point) of her answer.

Miss Raja answer is rigth, the only case is , she did not support her message clearly. If I were her, i could say that , althought misfortune is part of ones life , but in my case, i dont experience any big problem during my 22 years of existing due to the guidance of our Lord, whenever i made my decision, i need to pray for wisdom from our creator, and i do believed God will guide me the same to the rest of my life. i encourage everyone to ask for wisdom of any decision you want to make. I believed this the right support to her argument

Hi Venus! it’s my 55° b-day today and the 1°st thing I thought was about that very haste yet honest answer to that very last question on the paegeant. Don’t worry my dear, that question really did’nt have too much impact on you because in your whole life honestly you did’nt find any major mistake ever, really! “BIG MISTAKES” for us filippinos are sorts of moral sins where you never have done in your 22 years of life. But you got a technical mistake of not providing yourself a passport as a filippino citizen as you are really a filippino citizen thru your mom although was born outside Philippines….which could not be considered a very “BIG MISTAKE” but only carelessness of a very busy young girl yet carry huge life’s responsibilities for yourself, for the Phil. society as a model girl and for the whole households back home….YOU ARE VERY RARE!

noemi garciano commented on Aug 25 10 at 11:23 am

Ms. Elle is right! It’s was the judges and the media who have made a major major mistake by not recieving the reality of her honorable answer, for many of us have a hardtime believing, that young adults like her still do exist!

Helie commented on Aug 25 10 at 1:32 pm

Aside, that question should not be asked in the first place. Anyone will have a hardtime answering it without getting too personal. I say that question was unfair and should not be there.

Helie commented on Aug 25 10 at 1:39 pm

It’s funny beyond belief when people are trying to tell us another persons entire life story, like THEY would actually know.
I am an American with a Filipino wife, and to say “she has to be good because she is from a conservative rural area” is the biggest joke ever.
My wife is from an extremely conservative, rural area of the Philippines and she knows many women who run around, even with other married men.

Everyone and I mean “everyone” makes mistakes, even if it’s yelling at your parents once.
I am sure she is no perfect Saint, maybe a great girl or maybe not (I don’t know her) but she is not perfect, nobody else, and her answer came across as acting like she is or just too intimidated to name a single thing she has done wrong.

Here are some actual facts.

1: These contests are jokes, full of politics and whoever is naive enough to think “the right person” should or will win is silly.

2: She is not THAT pretty, many people think so, even Filipino’s I know make fun of her answer

3: I understand the “Pinoy pride” deal, but so what, every nation has pride, the real difference between a man and a boy is understanding YOUR SIDE DOES NOT ALWAYS WIN.
My team didn’t go to the Super Bowl, but BIG DEAL, I didn’t write a thousand word essay online on why they should have won.
Maybe this is God’s way of teaching her some humility and letting her know she is “not” perfect, or maybe there is a GOOD reason for this, again, I do not know.

I encourage everyone to lighten up, stop taking this serious even IF your nation is up there, the only 2 real reasons people watch it is for the swimsuit contest or the laugh factor.
The laugh factor is when someone slips or gives a stupid answer, and yes I freely admit I have seen the USA contestants both fall and act stupid many times and laughed at that as well.

In short, get a grip on reality, the world is STILL turning, it likely WAS NOT a massive conspiracy, you all DO NOT know her and I am sure she will continue living after this too!

Bec. i was confident that Ms. Raj would get the crown, i got so frustrated w/ what she said that i totally blamed her for such a dumb answer.. after reading your (elle27′s) comment, i have realized that yeah Ms. Raj gave the judges a complete honest answer. yes she could have come up w/ a “made-up story”, but she even didn’t think about it. she chose to be honest w/ the people in front of her. (perhaps thinking that it would earn her the credit more for doing the right thing-telling the truth) a value that perhaps was instilled in her mind since childhood. there are moments in our lives where we always choose to compromise our integrity by lying for the sake of getting what we want .. in this case, this kind of experience is an eye-opener to all of us who struggle in the area of “taming our tongue..

cyn commented on Aug 25 10 at 5:26 pm

i agree with garcia and robert berk. Eventhough she lived in a rural area, there’s no difference between living in a rural area and urban area… i believe that every person in this world commits mistake. Nobody is perfect.. maliit man o malaking kasalanan ang nagawa kasalanan parin… yah ulysses a. garcia is right.. her answer is correct but at least she must have supported her answer. Pangalan at mukha ng pilipinas/pilipino ang dinadala nya so she must have at least supported her answer. this is my opinion.. :)

It is easy for us to judge Venus kasi wala tayo sa position nya on that day. Naniniwala ako na Venus answer the question honestly. She did her best on that day. We should be proud of her instead napintasan ang sagot nya

marlon gomez commented on Aug 30 10 at 7:18 am

Perhaps Venus Raj is a good person but not making a mistake in life is not being human. How does one learn from not making mistakes? There are hundreds or even thousands of ways to answer the question. Dodging the question won’t win the crown as you can see.
