Justin Bieber Avenges Twitter Hacking. Did He Ruin His Good Rep?
Justin Bieber has always had a reputation as one of the nice-guy child stars, the kind you imagine will end up more like Melissa Joan Hart than one of the Olsen twins. But even a nice guy isn’t immune to doing some not-so-nice things.
Here’s what happened: First Kevin Kristopik, a Detroit kid, hacked into an account owned by a childhood friend of Bieber earlier this year. Kristopik found Bieber’s phone number and posted it online (briefly) for all to see.
Now here’s where the plot gets creative and where you can almost give Bieber props for his response, although really, as a mom, I cannot condone this behavior.
To avenge Kristopik’s hack, Bieber sent out this tweet to his 4.5 million followers on Saturday night: “everyone call me [number redacted] :) or text,” only it wasn’t really Bieber’s number. He had found out Kristopik’s number, and posted it online claiming that it was his own.
As you might imagine, Kristopik’s phone lit up with about a million teenage girls thinking they were going to get to talk to the Bieber, which means that in addition to punking Kristopik, Bieber also punked his fans.
Kristopik has since discontinued his own Twitter account, but not before sharing his feelings for Bieber (not very nice ones) and posting a YouTube video of his iPhone getting call after call from hopeful teenage girls.
Did Bieber, if he was indeed the one who did this and it wasn’t a case of yet another hack job, go too far? Well, it certainly doesn’t fall under the major child star tragedies category.
But it’s probably a good reminder that he’s still a teenager and needs some adult oversight – which is easy to forget when you have 4.5 million Twitter followers.
