Kanye West “Power” Video: What Would His Mom Think?
The Kanye West “Power” Video debuted on MTV last night, and it’s gotten everyone talking this morning with some pretty provocative imagery.
The rapper seems to be exploring his spiritual side, three years after the devastating and unexpected death of his mom, Donda West, from complications during cosmetic surgery.
Donda remains a huge influence on her son. He said last year, after his infamous “Video Music Award” highjacking of Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech, that Donda would not have approved of her son’s actions, and he was visibly upset about that.
What would Kanye’s mom think about his new video, the first new one MTV has shown since the “VMAs” incident? Read on for our thoughts.
The video lasts just 90 seconds, and West has described it as “a painting” rather than a full-fledged video.
It focuses on a dead-still West staring at the camera, which steadily pulls back to reveal a bevy of angels, nymphs and horned guards standing around him.
The filmy dresses on the guards leave little to the imagination – Donda, like any mother, may have disapproved of her son’s choice of costuming.
But the video is also making a greater statement about religion, the power of imagery, and the way our society idealizes things.
Could that also be Kanye’s way of beginning to deal with his mom’s death? Or perhaps an apology for the “VMAs” incident – Kanye admitting that he’d become too high and mighty to understand how it hurt Taylor? Those are issues worth exploring.
Donda would probably be proud of the effort and thought that went into the video, like any proud parent. And she’d love the song – it’s really catchy.
Bottom line for mom: Keep up the good work, Kanye, but next time make sure the women around you are fully clothed.

Brandon commented on Aug 06 10 at 8:59 amI can’t… I can’t believe that you actually brought his mom into the subject of the video… really?! Just stick to reviewing the actual video (or erm… painting), why the hell was half this article about his mom?
shannon commented on Aug 06 10 at 12:53 pmit’s not necessary to bring hsi mother into this, idk why the media loves bringing peoples dead loved ones into the mix.
Ebonie commented on Aug 16 10 at 12:43 pmcompletely agree with the above comments. really wasn’t necessary and was quite inappropriate.
