Though Paltrow didn’t struggled after her daughter, Apple, was born, she actress struggled extremely after her son, Moses, was born, and she recently talked candidly about it in the newest GOOP newsletter.

“When my son, Moses, came into the world in 2006, I expected to have another period of euphoria following his birth, much the way I had when my daughter was born two years earlier,” Paltrow said. “Instead I was confronted with one of the darkest and most painfully debilitating chapters of my life.”

Five months later, Paltrow learned she had postpartum depression, which was the reason for her deeply negative feelings.

Gwyneth Paltrow wasn’t the only actress who suffered from postpartum depression. Brook Shields has been very candid on the topic, and New Moon actress Bryce Dallas Howard also recently discussed her troubles after son Theo was born in February 2007. ”In those moments after giving birth, I felt nothing,” Howard said. She referred to her son as “it” rather than by his name, and avoided breastfeeding.

“I definitely felt I was a rotten mother–not a bad one, a rotten one,” Howard said. “Because the truth was, every time I looked at my son, I wanted to disappear.” Howard suffered from post-partum depression for a year-and-a-half before recovering. Now she stresses the importance of asking for help, and leaning on others around you.
