Usher Discusses Parental Rifts in VH1′s “Behind the Music”
Anyone who has followed Usher’s career knows that he famously fired his mother, Jonetta Patton, as his manager shortly after he announced his engagement to ex-wife Tameka Foster, then re-hired her. And that Patton never approved of her son’s relationship with Foster, who is the mother of Usher’s two children. In the new “Usher: Behind the Music,” Usher opens up about those issues as well as his estrangement from his father, who passed away in 2008. Some snippets of what is revealed:
Usher on his mother not approving his choice of spouse: “The relationship between me and Tameka, uh, definitely bothered my mother…She never chooses to speak about it, but, I think that she just didn’t approve of it because she didn’t want to.”
Usher’s mother on her firing: “I’ve been with him holding his hand since the age of 13. So he kind of wanted to step out and do his own thing as a man and I applaud him for that.”
Usher on his father: “I can remember still wondering, ‘Am I not good enough? Does he not want to know me? Does he know we have the same name? Why didn’t he want to call me or come see me? Does he think about me?’”
Patton on Usher’s father: “He was into drugs. He was into having a great time and that was it.”
Usher will also address cheating on TLC member Chili with her reaction to his subsequent autobiographical album.
