Is It Sexist That Kate Gosselin Gets Grief for “Me-Time?”
Another day, another photo of Kate Gosselin who seems to have an awful lot of free time for a single mother of eight. Going tanning. Getting a pedicure. Meeting a friend for dinner. “Sheesh!” we all seem to be thinking, “I don’t have half as many kids and yet I haven’t done anything for myself in months!”
Perhaps hell has frozen over, because I am about to defend Kate Gosselin.
At just UsMagazine.com alone over the past year have been the following headlines:
–Kate Gosselin Took 90 Minute Mani-Pedi Break Away from Practice
–Kate Gosselin Ditches Kids to Go Tanning, Get a Pedicure
–Kate Gosselin Finally Take a Break to Play With Kids
–Mom to Monster: Stayed at a Dinner While Son Went to Emergency Room
Rarely do you see a story about a father in the media with the implication that he’s selfish for not having his kids tag along while he, say, plays golf every single weekend. Why is that? Next time we’re going to fault Kate for having some perhaps well-deserved me-time, maybe we should ask ourselves if we’d feel the same toward a man. I guess society just has different standards for mothers. They should be selfless martyrs constantly tending to their children’s needs, not working moms who occasionally (or not so occasionally as the case may be) pamper themselves.
I think Gosselin is allowed to see friends, run some errands without dragging eight kids along and treat herself to a few pedicures now and then. (I won’t defend the tanning; she looks slightly orange.) And maybe we should give her a break: she might be obsessed with looking good because this is how she looked in 1990.
What do you think? (Not about the yearbook photo but my point in general — are we being too hard on Kate and does society hold mothers to a different standard than fathers?)

jkexploit8 commented on Jul 16 10 at 9:11 pmShe is a talentless fame whore who exploits her kids for money. Without her litter created by science she would be a nobody. She is no mother to those children. The children have been raised by an army of nannies. One day those innocent kids will be emancipated from this shrew.
vickie commented on Jul 17 10 at 11:49 pmI’m wondering if Christy and JKEXPLOIT8 have ever actually met Kate Gosselin or if they are merely giving worthless opinions about a person they have never met? It is so easy to judge when you don’t know what you are talking about isn’t it? Personally, I would be ashamed to talk about someone that way and have my own child read my words. Where does such venom come from?
