Why the Parents of Joran Van Der Sloot’s Victims May Never Get Closure

Joran Van Der Sloot Confession 300x225 Why the Parents of Joran Van Der Sloots Victims May Never Get ClosureIt’s one of the worst nightmares a parent could possibly go through: Losing a child and then never finding out the full truth of what happened. I would imagine part of eventually finding peace (if that’s ever possible) is at least knowing the circumstances surrounding the child’s death. Unfortunately, the parents of Joran Van Der Sloot’s suspected victims, Stephany Flores and Natalee Holloway, may never have that chance. Here’s why:

1) Only Joran is able to provide the answers, and he’s a pathological liar. In the Holloway case, he’s changed his story multiple times: he dropped her off at a hotel; she had convulsions and he disposed of the body out at sea with the assistance of a friend; and finally that he sold her into sexual slavery. More recently he said his father helped him bury Holloway’s body in the foundation of a house. In the Flores case, he first claimed a robber killed Flores before confessing to the crime, claiming she accessed his computer, setting off his anger. Van Der Sloot’s close confidante and ex-girlfriend said of him: “He would lie for no apparent reason at all … and if you caught him at it … he would double down and be even more serious about the story.”

2) The one other person who might have some insight into Holloway’s fate is deceased. Van Der Sloot’s father, Paul — perhaps the one other person who might know the truth about what happened to Holloway —  died of a heart attack earlier this year, taking any knowledge he may have had to the grave.

3) His mother, Anita Van Der Sloot, does not seem inclined to encourage her son to come clean. In fact, in an e-mail she was insisting he was set up in the Flores case, saying Joran “is not a murderer” and “it stinks and feels like a big trap set up for him.”

4) He could get killed in jail before the families get justice — and the truth. Former inmate and prison expert Larry Levine believes Van Der Sloot could be killed in Peruvian prison. “”I’d tell him, ‘you’re not going to make it. What you need to do is pray because someone’s gonna kill ya, and just enjoy the rest of the time you have on earth’.”

5) A psychological report deemed Van Der Sloot sane, but someone who “devalues women” and “is indifferent when it comes to the welfare of others.” Which means he would have no compassion for the victims’ families, and no interest in easing their pain by speaking the truth.

I think of Beth Holloway Twitty and wonder what it must be like to not have been able to bury her daughter, wondering if Natalee is still alive and then finally accepting that she is most likely deceased. You hear stories about families that had given up hope only to have their child rescued, like Jaycee Dugard, and wonder if it rekindles Beth’s prayer for a miracle. Plus the fact Van Der Sloot may never be tried in that case. Let’s hope all the parents get the answer they’re looking for — and justice.

To the author -for me -you nailed it. I just wonder what the ??? is up with his mother to be so adamant about defending him. Wonder how she’d feel if her son had been the one that came up missing. I bet if the shoes were on her feet she would be blowing a horn and having all sorts of fits. Her son is hated all over the world and she is too. I think when she realized that the world was turning on her she started making statements like “he may have killed Stepahny” – she can’t take ownership either. That’s what being rich and feeling entitled and above it gets her. I think Joran lacked any kind of real parenting and if he were tortured with extreme pain – he would come clean fast! In his case I think he should be. Look at the size of him and what he did to Stephany. One has to sumise he did the same to Natalee. Neither one of them stood a chance. How can anyone not feel terrible and sympathy for the Holloways. The world will be a much better place after he is gone.

paulaflowers commented on Jul 12 10 at 4:30 pm

yes she is defending her son even though he is forsure guilty of these crimes but that is what a mother does. She is trying to justify for any reason her son did not do this, even though deep down she knows he did! It’s her motherly instinct to protect her child and defend them, even though you know they have done wrong! I hope the SOB get’s railed in prison! What goes around comes around Joran!!!

Jason commented on Jul 12 10 at 4:43 pm

I know, as we all do, that this spoiled psychopath killed both these girls. I think we have known it for a very long time, but the effecitiveness of his deception and web of lies has prevented the Aruban buffoons (more intereseted in making the story go away than justice) from prosecuting it successfully. I wish we could bring Natalee home and give her the dignity of a burial but if her family must be denied that rite then I suppose Jorans death by long slow endless sentence and obscurity would suffice until eternity presents itself. No…nothing quick for him….long and slow and no one calling to talk or listen to his drivel anymore. It’s not perfect (perfection would be Natalee and Stephany home safe and this jackass still in prison) but it’s a start!

DeeDee commented on Jul 12 10 at 6:01 pm

Good points but let me add this. Joran killed Stephanie for 3 reasons. For the money in her purse. For the $10k he suspect she had in her bank account (that he thought he could get to with her bank card). And to make her disappear (same as Natalee) to extort $ from the media and her family. Thank God he was too stupid to make that work. The only unanswered question is why she went into his room. And that answer will never be known. As to Natalee, when joran is released into general population and his fellow inmates hear there is a reward for the info in his head (up to $1MM) they will brutally extract the truth. The police couldnkt because they have rules. The convicts don’t.

MNIN commented on Jul 12 10 at 6:04 pm

Lying is Joran’s alibi. It worked when he killed Natalee, and he is hoping it will work again. Joran is a psychopath, and his mother believes the part he plays for her is “real” Joran. Oh momma.. the worst lies are the ones we tell ourselves…

Mama Bear commented on Jul 12 10 at 6:22 pm

I agree wholeheartedly with what has been said above.
Furthermore I would like to add that from the beginning I suspected his father did help him dispose of Natalie’s body. With this in mind I can’t help but feel his mother knows a lot more than she is letting on. My view is that she should be brought in for intensive questioning and undergo a polygraph. It is way past time for the truth to be known what happened on that fateful night. I do believe a mother knows what is going on in her family it is kind of a sixth sense especially in this case where her husband is possibly involved in the cover up. There is nothing to lose in having her questioned and possibly everything to gain to finally shed some light and ease to some small degree the horrible pain Natalie’s family is going through.

Ian Bell commented on Jul 12 10 at 6:25 pm

Good points, however, there are still two people that possibly know the truth..the Kalpo (sp?) brothers. They have lied also, were with Joran the night of Natalies disappearance. One can only hope that the Aruban police will do their duty for a change.

RacePro commented on Jul 12 10 at 6:40 pm

I agree with everyone here and it obviously upsets us all…Patricia brought up a point, those brothers know something and should be brought back in for investigation. I wish the world would boycott Aruba and force them into some sort of ecconomic plight to do the right thing….you would think they would want to lock up these hoodlums…obvioulsy, thier parents have endless amounts of money…

Paula Flowers commented on Jul 12 10 at 7:11 pm

It takes good parenting to teach your beloved children not to act innappropiatly when you travel abroad or do not sleep with strangers becuase you are risking your own precious life… stupidity can not be granted.

juanaamazonas commented on Jul 12 10 at 9:58 pm

Let’s all hope and pray that Stephanie’s daddy, who has money puts out a contract on the punk and some really bad slug fulfulls that contract as soon as the punk is released into the general population of the prison. Agree?

caseyatbat commented on Jul 12 10 at 10:16 pm

I agree with an earlier comment regarding the Kapoe brothers; they should be given immunity from prosecution if that exists in Aruba. Maybe they are no longer in Aruba? The fine citizens of Aruba are fed up with the Van Sloots and will not even discuss Joran, dismissing him with high disregard. I think that Joran will eventually be done in by others, outside of the law, and I have little trouble with this. It would be fitting for him to be demoralized as another inmates ‘bitch’ and have some humiliation and pain for all that he has caused.

JL Ransom commented on Jul 12 10 at 10:46 pm

One more thing: don’t ‘boycott Aruba’; if anyone is at fault it is with the individuals within the justice system here that may have been influenced by Joran’s father to play down the initial investigation. Or perhaps things were examined as best as could be done; we in the US don’t do much better vis e vis the JonBenet Ramsey case. Certainly the people of ARuba do not need any attempt at a boycott – besides it wouldn’t work – it is low season here as my family vacations and the tourist industry seems little affected. MOreover, I doubt the van Sloot family has much money left or for that matter much legal pull beyond that of a common citizen. Let’s hope that Peru can move this along within their legal system and that Joran receives his just desserts.

JL Ransom commented on Jul 12 10 at 11:08 pm

okay, no boycott – this is so upsetting – as with all cases like this. I just feel like the Aruban political system was bought and paid for …and for that matter similiar stuff happens here.

Paula Flowers commented on Jul 12 10 at 11:12 pm

I think the problem in the Holloway case was simple. Extremely poor police work. They should have had Joran in jail from day one along with the Kalpro brothers. They were the last ones to see her alive and pretty much anyone could figure out they needed to be in jail so they couldn’t plan a cover up. Also, they should have kept all three separated and really grilled each of them and work them against each other until they got one of them to tell the truth. As far as the mother and father being involved. I don’t know, but it seems very peculiar that his father was pulling strings behind the scenes so my guess is he at the very least knew something about the disappearance. As far as Stephanie goes I don’t think we’ll ever know why she went to his room, but it didn’t take long for her to regret that decision. I think this guy has done this more than twice. He just slipped up this time and he was in the wrong place at the wrong time and now he will pay the price. As far as getting the truth from him, it ain’t gonna happen! I just wish the Aruba authorities would arrest the Kalpo brothers one new evidence (find some) and do it right this time and maybe then we’d get some truthful answers.

Good points above. The Kalpo brothers should be brought in for questioning.
Another thing which has me wondering for weeks now is that Joran could possible have had something to do with his own dads passing.
I have read that Joran was suppose to check himself into a psychiatric clinic get help. His own mother said he is sick in the head, which
makes me wonder if his dad was going to turn him in and Joran gave him something which cause him to have a heart attack.
I sure hope the police looked into the possibility.
Joran is sick! Not even psychiatric help will do him any good.

norcal girl commented on Jul 13 10 at 4:28 am

I believe she is buried under the foundation of a house father helped move the body from the first location near the hotel to the building spot.

Bill Carson commented on Jul 13 10 at 8:27 am

Joran could possible have had something to do with his own dads passing.I Agree i think the same thing it’s quite easy for him to get the right drugs as he was dealing in it i heard ..They should of done an Altopsy..and not asume it was heartattack…

Someone in Florida commented on Jul 13 10 at 9:08 am

I don’t think he should be killed, executed or anything like that. That would be too easy for him. My vote is to let him in the general Peru population as soon as possible for the rest of his life. Death is too good for him; suffering is not. Also suggest printing our comments and mailing them to him so he can know just how “special” everybody thinks he is…

Michele commented on Jul 13 10 at 10:03 am

The evidence is pretty conclusive that he killed Stephany and it appears certain that he will be convicted for this crime either with or without a confession.

When he was captured, he had ocean current and tidal charts of Peruvian waters that he had printed out. This makes it seem like he has experience using these for disposing of bodies at sea so that the bodies are not found. It is probable that this is how Natalee’s body was disposed of and it will never be found.

Blorg commented on Jul 13 10 at 11:38 am

Van der Sloot is a punk, plain and simple. Not only is he a womanizer, but a murderer. The only reason I don’t want him dead is because he can give peace to two families. When he does give all the actual information, I could care less if he gets killed in prison. He’s not a man, but a boy in a man’s guise. A real man wouldn’t have killed, and areal man would have fessed up if he did commit a crime and was caught. Punk ass!

fortunate son commented on Jul 20 10 at 1:16 pm

I believe boycotting Aruba is correct because the authorities did everything they could to make the Holloway problem simply go away. They obscured evidence, led goose-chases, played with emotions and kicked the can until time wore on and ran out. They KNOW what happened. They know everything that happens on that island. They look the other way for tourism. “move along… nothing to see here, move along. Have another maitai….”

And another victim is found elsewhere. Yes the blame of Flores death lays at the Aruban Govt/Justice/Police. I am not the only person who thinks this.
The mother is as corrupt as the father and GOD help his brothers now. This is their legacy and they too are victims of this killer and his minions.
Aruba: you didn’t kill Natalee but you sure helped keep her vanished. This is no paradise.

Chris commented on Jul 22 10 at 9:32 am

I have always felt that whatever happen to Natalee happen at the Van der Sloot home. I believe the father was far more involved than just helping of rid the body. If I’m recalling correctly it was at least ten days before the Van der Sloot car was searched. The mother was away the week(end) Natalee disappeared. The Kalpoe brother’s have stated they first stop at Joran’s home before going to the beach. The father and son were very close. Joran is a gambler I think he may have borrowed money from Stephany with the promise of repayment, this is how he was able to get her to his room. Promising her he had money there. He had intended to rob her, and she wasn’t having it! Maybe he is giving out clues
maybe Natalee is buried on their property…the mom is not coming to Peru, because she is watching the LAND.

Ms. Anne commented on Jul 23 10 at 3:34 pm

I can’t remember exactly how it goes but ….. if you wait long enough by the river, the bodies of your enemies will float past.

Krip commented on Jul 24 10 at 8:27 am

Just give him some truth serum. He will confess to his crimes like it or not. The Courts should have the authority to force upon him such procedure. The right to know the truth trumps any other right.

crksr commented on Aug 02 10 at 8:43 am

We all assume Joran is the murdere because he was the last person seen with the two young ladies while they were alive. Please do not fault Anita, she is in denial and that is what mothers do when they cannot handle the truth. One day Joran will get what is comming to him. I only hope there are not any other victims.

unique commented on Aug 25 10 at 10:01 pm

I feel so sorry for Anita. Her dead husband is known in Aruba as a very good man. The international media has made of Joran what he is today. He is being used as a scapegoat, lot of people in Aruba knows what happened to Natalee, why aren’t they talking, someone can’t vanish on such a small island without a trace! People are still being murdered (cases unsolved) and people are still disappearing (cases unsolved) and Joran is not on this island. Who is (are) to blame for these crimes??
