Maggie Gyllenhaal Broke Down on Set
Actresses and good friends Maggie Gyllenhaal and Emma Thompson–who both star in the upcoming film Nanny McPhee and The Big Bang, sat down with Good Housekeeping magazine recently for the August issue, and revealed how Thompson helped Gyllenhaal when she had a major breakdown on set.
Gyllenhaal, whose daughter Ramona (with actor husband Peter Sarsgaard) was only two at the time of filming, apparently couldn’t quite take the pressure of raising a toddler and filming a Hollywood movie. “I had one day on the set when I was overwhelmed. I was a newlywed, I had a 2-year-old…and I remember cracking a little bit,” she told Good Housekeeping.
Fortunately for Gyllenhaal, Thompson, a mom of two herself, was there to support her and give her advice. Gyllenhaal said of breaking down, “You’re not allowed to fall completely apart when you’re carrying a movie; you’re a professional–but I did one day, just a little bit.” But Thompson talked her down from the ledge, convincing Gyllenhaal it was okay to let go a little bit. As many mothers out there know, and as Thompson assured Gyllenhaal, you simply can’t juggle everything at once, all the time.
It’s good to know even A-list Hollywood celebrities face the same struggles as parents as anyone–and that all moms (and dads) can benefit from good friends and good advice. And, in Gyllenhaal’s case, hubby Peter Sarsgaard doesn’t hurt either. ” The big thing is that we’re able to talk to each other, which I think is pretty remarkable,” she says of their husband-wife relationship.
Even if she had a break down on set, at least Gyllenhaal mastered the art of leaning on her support system.
