Pregnant Alicia Keys Falls On Stage In 4 Inch Heels (VIDEO)
We always marvel and gawk at pregnant celebs wearing heels on the red carpet because it seems uncomfortable. Who wants to have your arches unnaturally contorted by pretty things when your back hurts and your feet are swollen?
But heels aren’t just painful, they can also be dangerous. Alicia Keys fell during a performance at the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans due to her four inch heels. The singer and her baby are both fine, but this should be taken as a warning. Plenty of doctors have come out against pregnant women in stilettos.
“There are various musculoskeletal changes that occur throughout pregnancy as a result of hormonal fluctuations and weight gain. An exaggerated curve of the lower back, joint laxity, and a change in the center of gravity are some of these common adaptations of pregnancy. Ideally, expectant moms should avoid wearing excessive high heels if they begin to experience back pain. They also should skip high heels to avoid falling,” Dr. Lisa M. Valle tells the Stir.
Britain’s Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists found that seven out of 10 mothers-to-be suffer foot ailments after wearing the wrong kind of shoes. “Weight gain and hormonal changes in pregnancy have a huge impact on the body,” podiatrist Lorraine Jones told the BBC. “High heels alter your posture, shorten your calf muscles, and place increased pressure on your back and knees. In pregnancy this places extra pressure on your joints when they are already under strain — which can result in a host of foot, leg, and back problems and could increase the likelihood of falls.”
This does not mean you have to be barefoot and pregnant. We all have those favorite pair of heels we love and make us feel special, but maybe they should be reserved for special occasions which involve a lot of sitting. For other times, there are plenty of cute flats out there.
We hopefully won’t see Alicia in heels any time soon. Empire State is going to sound a lot better to the audience if they’re not worried about her falling and hurting herself and her baby.
