Talks Underway on Karate Kid Sequel
A Karate Kid sequel appears to be a sure thing, given the success of the Jaden Smith-Jackie Chan remake over its opening weekend. It took the top spot at the box office, proof that Will Smith’s son has staying power in Hollywood. As for installment #2 of the franchise, director Harald Zwart reveals that we should expect the unexpected.
He says that the he and his crew haven’t talked nuts and bolts of a second movie — until this weekend’s confirmation of the film’s draw, he didn’t want to jinx things — but he’d like to see the second film take off on its own, rather than mimic the sequel of the original 1984 Karate Kid. “I personally think it’s now so much on its own two feet, given the success, that it would be interesting to see where we could take it without ever thinking about the old ones,” he told MTV News.
As for the film’s $56-million take on opening weekend, he’s thrilled, and credits his stars. “The truth is, when you see Jackie and Jaden, they’re like a really good film couple. On and off camera, I was watching how they were pulling practical jokes on each other and throwing rocks in the lake, and you just want to keep looking at them because they have a great dynamic and great humor.”
It’s one thing on which every critic agreed: Jaden Smith has charm, and his chemistry with Jackie Chan is unbeatable.
