Karenna Gore Schiff’s Split: it’s the 3rd Gore Marriage to Tank. What’s Up?
If news of Karenna Gore Schiff’s separation brought on intense deja-vu, there’s a reason. Not only did her parents Al and Tipper announced their separation last week, but sister Kristin Gore endured her own divorce just a year ago. In fact, of the four marriages in the Gore family, only one remains intact.
It’s important to note that there’s still hope for Karenna Gore and Andrew Schiff, who’ve been married for 12 years and have three kids, ages 3 to 10. They’ve reportedly been in counseling and are looking to work things out. Having kids is a great incentive for overlooking a few issues.
Kristin’s marriage to Paul Cusack, however, is totally kaput. Kristin Gore’s divorce was finalized, after four years of marriage, at this time last summer. With no kids involved it was almost certainly a comparably easy split. Easier than Karenna having to deal with custody issues, and easier than Al Gore and Tipper having to deal with the expectations of a nation (and their grown kids’ expectations, since kids remain kids, no matter how old).
There’s no news on what drove either of the Gore daughters’ marriages apart. Kristen’s divorce papers cited only “irreconcilable differences.” It’s got me thinking, however, about the recent studies saying there’s a higher incidence of divorce in couples when the wife makes more money than the hushand. The Gore girls’ husbands made plenty of cash — Schiff is a doctor who now works as a Managing Partner at a biotech-focused private equity fund, Cusack works in politics (or used to, at least) — but there’s a definite fame deficit on their end of the relationships. How hard is it to be constantly overshadowed by your father-in-law? Very hard, is what I’d guess.
There’s still one marriage going strong in the Gore camp: Youngest daughter Sarah Gore remains married to businessman Bill Lee, who she wed in 2007 (at right). At her wedding, a source told People magazine, “Al was the life of the party. He and Tipper rocked on the dance floor.”
Three years ago, and yet it feels like a lifetime. Here’s hoping Sarah’s union holds on strong, and that Karenna’s makes a comeback. As for Al and Tipper, I fear it’s over for good. But I’ll be keeping an eye on it, regardless.
