Natalee Natalee Holloways Mom Opens Center for Missing Kids

In the wake of the Joran Van der Sloot confession (more below), Natalee Holloway’s mom, Beth Holloway, is opening a center for missing children. While Beth Holloway will certainly never totally recover from Natalee’s disappearance, both of today’s actions should go a long way toward helping her find closure.

Natalee disappeared in Aruba in 2005, and while her body has never been found, she’s largely believed to have been kiled by Joran Van der Sloot. Van der Sloot still hasn’t confessed to the Holloway murder, but today he confessed to killing another woman, Stephany Flores, in Peru.

Mere hours after that confession, Holloway’s mom made her way to Washington D.C., to commemorate her daughter in a way that will help other families, nationwide.

The Natalie Holloway Resource Center, launching today in Washington’s National Museum of Crime & Punishment, aims to protect children so that they don’t disappear. Its main focus is on safety education and crime prevention. It’s not primarily a recovery center, but will certainly help parents of missing children find resources and contacts that can aid them, and also will help them coordinate media efforts.

While the timing seems fortuitous — coming as a Van Der Sloot confession to Natalee’s murder may be just hours or days away — it also brings to mind the other sad news of the past week. Last Friday, Kyron Hormon, 7, disappeared from his school in Oregon, on the day of his class’s science fair. No clues have yet been found. As we celebrate the life of Natalee Holloway, let’s also hope for good news in the Kyron Hormon case.
