Helen Thomas has retired since my blog post this morning about her cancelled high-school graduation speech. The 89-year-old Dean of the White House press corps, a torchbearer for female reporters, has had an unfathomably long career. And, until this week, has been uniformly praised and admired. Some of us will have trouble respecting her now that she’s advocated returning Israel’s Jews — a population that includes many Holocaust survivors and descendants of Holocaust survivors — to Germany. And Poland. And wherever else they came from.

And yet, a number of students at Bethesda’s Walt Whitman High School, where she was supposed to give the commencement address, are upset that Thomas’ speech at their school has been cancelled. And they’re doing something about it. Check out this on-the-scene report.

Nate Freeman, a summer reporter for theawl.com, returned to his hometown of Bethesda over the weekend, and witnessed what was going on firsthand. Freeman writes:

“The Black & White—the Whitman student paper that I was the editor of a million years ago—is reporting that the students are prepping for their four years of parent-funded half-assed activism (that’s what college is for, right?) by feigning some independent opinions. The article says that after the fateful Thomas comment was leaked, senior Erica Bloom took to her friends list and invited her buddies to a Facebook event organizing a protest.”

Not only was there that Facebook call to cancel Thomas’ speech (and the speech eventually was cancelled, according to reports, on a joint agreement by Thomas and the school), but another group rose up to protest the protest. These students argued that the Helen Thomas graduation speech should go on as scheduled. Explains Freeman, “another Facebook group entitled ‘Helen Thomas should have been our graduation speaker’—started by Whitman senior Will Bartlett—is still active. ‘This group affirms a belief in reasonable discussion and feel that in this scenario, a clear minority was able to override a larger majority by distorting the issues and discussion,’ the group’s description reads.”

I’d have been a bit shocked about that second group, except that high school is a time for protests and for protests of protests. When I was in high school, I pamphleted against nuclear weapons and for more political activism. Isn’t that just what these kids are doing? And what I hope my son will do once he’s finally old enough to read? Plus, we’d already heard from one Walt Whitman students ourselves. The student posted on our own Famcrawler blog, here (see the first comment).

I support the students. Thomas, unlike other journalists, is not a mouthpiece for the government.

It’s a pleasure to see such an old dried out anti-semitic witch be put out to pasture. I can only hope her prune like visage on the net and TV will not be broadcast to much longer. Why? I fear her withering old leather face may turn the innocent at heart to stone. We can always reference Greek Mythology to understand the myth of Medusa who turned everyone she gazed upon to stone. Helen, this sweet, old, dehydrated, anti-semite may turn out to be a myth come come true

What Helen meant?

It’s highly irresponsible that immigrants move anywhere if the indigenous population is forced to move out giving up their land and rights.
Therefore if Helen was saying that the existing population should move out then isn’t that exactly what has been happening to the Palestinians.
Sure the way Helen said it bear in mind she said Palestine not Israel didn’t sound right but remember it was more or less private and who knows what the exact context it was said in.

I think she had a VERY senior moment and it just goes to show that she should have left her seat long ago. This woman is in her 80′s and has been respected for a long time. I think unfortunately though, she is suffering from dementia and her statements show a lack of executive functioning and rationale.

The dismissal of Helen just proves beyond a doubt who really rules America and crafting of public opinion. Helen Thomas and Jimmy Carter are simply bringing the people the truth. How many more 911′s and Middle Eastern wars will be have to bear to preserve Aparteid in Palestine?

The students who support Helen Thomas’s speaking at their graduation are right.

Helen Thomas expressed the frustration of many Arab-Americans that Israel is given a free pass for its abuse of their Palestinian neighbors. This can, and should be a topic of discussion, along with finding solutions to the problem.

As a member of the class of ’77, and an ardent Palestinian supporter, I can personally speak to the irrational opposition to anything other than the Zionist point of view. It’s high time there was an open dialog at our high school!

Zionists control the government. They use free speech to hate and disgrace other groups but the remove those who use speech against them. Get the country back and boot israeli lovers out so we can have an ethical country again like the times JFK led it

What is done to Helen Thomas goes to show you how our first amendment and freedom of speech is being endangered by the Zionists owned Media and News organizations. How the infiltration of the Zionists into our government and daily life is the most imminent danger to this country and our values.

They can block and defame others and protect themselves from any damages or backlash of their atrocities. The “Goldstone” report by the UN is forgotten, the latest killing of unarmed and innocent people on the seas and other places are not followed up and no journalist dare to criticizes the Israelis or the Zionists.

Other peoples such ourselves who blog and comment on daily news are being censored and taken out. The power to shape American public opinion is a power that is now controlled by the Zionists and they can shut down our freedom of expression and speech when they want to.

Wake up and see who is stealing your country from underneath you.
