Well, James Cameron did control both the Titanic and Avatar. Ted Danson kept the mayhem under control at Cheers. Kevin Costner—sorry, he went down with the ship in Waterworld. And all three have managed the out-of-control chaos of having children. So is it any surprise that they’re all lending a hand with the calamitous Gulf Coast oil spill? Yes, these three famous dads are the Gulf of Mexico’s reigning Oil Spill Celebrities.

James Cameron’s oil spill heroics weren’t, actually, his idea. He was summoned by the U.S. Government. While that sounds like a joke — or a plot for a stinker the size of Waterworld II — it’s true. He’s one of the 20 experts (mostly scientists) who were called in to brainstorm with U.S. officials (including representatives of the Environmental Protection agency) after the Top Kill plan  failed to stop the leak. Why Cameron? Because he is one of the world’s leading experts on filming deep underwater. If anyone will know how to get a good look at the disaster-under-the-sea, it’s James Cameron.

Ted Danson has been a longtime supporter of the world’s oceans, and has come out against off-shore drilling in the past. Last week he took his campaign to Larry King Live, where, as a representative of Oceana, he angrily called for an end to all ocean drilling. Citing the current Gulf Coast oil spill, he said, “Accidents do happen. Period.”

And finally, in May, Kevin Costner stepped in to try to aid in the cleanup by donating a number of Ocean Therapy machines, deviced he created to clean oil from sea water. How’d that go? Check out the video of him demonstrating it here. That was half-a-month ago. Last I looked, there’s still oil in the water. But let’s not blame Costner for that.
