Elizabeth Edwards Attempting To Deny John Custody Of Their Kids After She’s Gone
Elizabeth Edwards, who has been suffering from cancer for years, has started making preparations for her death. The most pressing concern: Who will have custody of her children?
John Edwards was caught in a much publicized scandal, cheating on his wife and fathering a child with new age hippie Rielle Hunter. Rielle has given a few interviews, in GQ and on Oprah, in which she has stated her belief that her and John will be married someday. Elizabeth, apparently worried about just that scenario, is trying to keep Rielle far away from her kids Emma, 12, and Jack, 10, by leaving custody to her and John’s eldest Cate, 28.
Hard as it is to face the worst-case scenario, Elizabeth “has been grooming Cate to take over,” a source tells the New York Daily News. “She’s a smart and competent woman,”they continue, noting that, she graduated from Harvard Law School, has been clerking in federal court in Alexandria, Va, and owns a Georgetown row house.
Most custody experts don’t think this will fly in court. When the father is still alive, any choice for custody other them him is a difficult case.
Elizabeth and John are legally separated, but custody experts don’t think that leaving the kids to anyone other than John will stand legally. The father always has the paramount right to succeed to the custody of his natural children unless he is unfit. Although he showed poor judgement in cheating, which successfully killed his political career/marriage/public image, he hasn’t been charged with drugs or any criminal behavior.
I agree that I’d want my kids far away from the woman my husband cheated with if I wasn’t around, but children should always be with their natural parent if they are able. What do you think?

Elizabeth Edwards Says No Custody for John | Strollerderby commented on Jun 01 10 at 3:16 pmJudy commented on May 31 10 at 5:05 pmChildren shouldn’t always be with a natural parent if that parent is unfit. Besides Edwards may not be available to parent if he is found guilty of violating federal law by paying off his mistress with campaign funds and gets locked up for ten years.
Magge Collins commented on May 31 10 at 7:33 pmI can’t fault Elizabeth for this. I would want my oldest daughter to care for my younger children in a situation like this also. God bless her – and Cate and Emma and Jack. You have fought a good fight, Elizabeth. May God hold you in His tender loving arms, and give you peace.

Stephanie commented on Jun 01 10 at 1:28 pmJust because he cheated doesn’t make him the antichrist. I think she’s leaving the world with the wrong kind of energy if this is true.
Anna commented on Jun 01 10 at 3:49 pmSad state of affairs. If John Edwards has any compassion at all he will agree to Cate taking physical custody even if he retains legal custody.
