Years ago, the actress stepped away from her career to raise her kids, and 5 years later, she is sticking by that choice–and indeed, continuing to make it. Last month, she pulled out of a movie in order to spend more time at home with her husband, Chris Martin, and their two kids, Apple and Moses.

“It’s probably not the best thing for your career, but my kids are my priority. They need me at home,” Paltrow said.

In an interview with Britain’s New magazine, Gwyneth is upfront about the emotional costs of being away from her kids while making movies.

“When I was doing the last movie, Moses didn’t like it. Some days you think, ‘Oh my God. They’re in the bath right now and I’m not there.’ I’d cry in my trailer.”

She also thinks that being away from home would have consequences for her marriage to Chris Martin, which she admits takes work, like any other relationship.

Of course, its easy to choose to spend more time at home when money is no object. But money isn’t the only reason most people work, and when you have a career you love, it must be hard to know that in order to pursue it, you pretty much have to take a few months at a time away from your family. I mean, Gwyneth could go the Angelina Jolie model and home school her kids, and bring them all around the world with her. But it seems that isn’t the experience she is trying to give them.

“I love picking them up from school, and I love cooking with them. It’s such a gift,” Paltrow explains. “I love what I do, too, but their needs are more important than my needs. I don’t need to be doing three films a year and be the biggest star.”

Again, she’s lucky to have that choice to make. Still, I applaud her for it, because it sounds like she has figured out how to balance her career with her family in a way she finds gratifying.
