What Are the Chances Angelina Jolie’s Twins Have Down Syndrome?

knox jolie pitt1 e1272575880848 What Are the Chances Angelina Jolies Twins Have Down Syndrome?Angelina Jolie looked movie made-up ready when her and Knox Jolie-Pitt appeared on their Venice balcony following the absurd rumors from the National Enquirer that Knox and his twin sister Vivienne have Down Syndrome.  Other than the fact these kids show no outward markers of the disease, they are fraternal twins who don’t share the same exact chromosomes or DNA. The chances of them both having DS is off-the-charts rare. Want to know how rare?

Just a quick back-of-the-hand calculation (keep in mind I’m not a doctor or mathematician): Per the National Institute of Health, a 35-year-old woman has a 1 in 400 chance of having a child with DS, which means, mathematically, there is 0.000625 percent chance that both twins, with different DNA, would have DS. And Angelina was only 33 when she gave birth to the twins, making it even more rare. So if you believe this story, I have another one for you: Suri Cruise is part alien from a specimen Tom Cruise stole from Scientology headquarters.

They both look like down’s babies and I have said that since the first photo of them. You are wrong sister.

Shame on the National Inquire. These children do not look like they have Down Syndrome at all. It’s pretty sick when a mag (or whatever you want to call their trash magazine) has to make up a story about 2 innocent children. They both look normal to me. Happy in fact :)

Abby commented on Apr 29 10 at 9:58 pm

People who said they have DS must have DS themselves. DS looks are so obvious. You guys need to go to your eye doctor, seriously.

George commented on Apr 29 10 at 10:09 pm

The National Enquirer article does not state that the twins have DS, only that people on the internet are saying they do.

Skeletrout commented on Apr 29 10 at 10:24 pm

THANK YOU. I have been saying this for days. It is a near impossibility. For the record, Down syndrome is not a disease, and young women actually have a higher chance of having a baby with DS, the odds are just higher in older women because they have fewer babies in general.

Michelle commented on Apr 29 10 at 10:42 pm

OMG- this is a stretch. I work with DS children. Yes, they have certain charateristics. No, these children do not have any apparent characteristic!

Rob commented on Apr 29 10 at 11:59 pm

They don’t have DS but there is something w/developmental disabilities. Something is up. I still can’t believe NE would use the term “Down Syndrome” and not developmental delays. Insane!

sickitten commented on Apr 30 10 at 12:40 am

This is why I will never ever support the Enquirer. I have never and will never spend my money on their trash mag.

Quinitia commented on Apr 30 10 at 12:46 am

SICK EVIL Jennifer Aniston fans started this rumor. Her dumb middle aged white housewive fans just CANNOT get over a FIVE YEAR old divorce. Pathetic!

Heidi commented on Apr 30 10 at 2:34 am

what kind of CRAP is this??? This is beyond LOW. Those kids are beautiful. Do these look like down-syndrome kids: http://mylt.ltcdn.com/files/images/E-600×250-joliepittbabiesabc.jpg

Marc commented on Apr 30 10 at 6:23 am

Most likely if they were DS, they wouldn’t be walking at 1 yo!!!!! Yes, they are beautiful, but so is my daugher who DOES have DS and is at least as beautiful as these babies!

Mary commented on Apr 30 10 at 1:24 pm

Please stop acting like Down syndrome is the worst thing to ever happen! It is not an insult, it is a syndrome! Real people have it, YES. PEOPLE. With feelings! Having Down syndrome does not make you less beautiful than someone who doesn’t have it. People are ignorant. Yes, there are characteristics and certain facial features that are common, but again, they don’t make the person ugly…

Amanda commented on Apr 30 10 at 1:32 pm

What difference does it make. They love their children and will do what is best for them. I don’t see where it is anyones business but theirs.

shirley forsyth commented on Apr 30 10 at 6:14 pm

The girl twin looks like she may possibly, but I don’t see it in the boy at all. But if either of them do or don’t, they are both gorgeous, and it’s not the Enquirer’s business to reveal anyways.

MM commented on Apr 30 10 at 8:32 pm

Aniston’s fanatics started these rumors. I have almond shaped eyes and I looked a lot like Vivienne when I was little. Let me tell you a little about my adult life: I was a Wilhelmina model, and I’ve modeled for Avon, and a lot of other makeup lines. I am now an actress, and I am considered exotic, and let’s just say I don’t go out for the plain jane or girl next door roles. They are cute kids and we should just leave it at that. There is nothing wrong with Down’s kids, but this is brought up as a slight. I can’t believe grown people would pick on children. Shame on Aniston! Call your goons off!!!

KM commented on May 01 10 at 3:37 am

KM, people theorizing that these children have Downs is about as ridiculous as you claiming to be a model and actress, and as ridiculous as people like you blaming this rumor on Jennifer Aniston. When the people who are suggesting these babies have Downs they are at least basing their claims on pictures. Your accusation about Jennifer Aniston is based upon absolutely NOTHING. How is it that you are any better than the people who are perpetuating this rumor? They are making a baseless accusation (the claims of Downs is meant as an accusation) and you are making a baseless accusation. How are you any different or any better? Perhaps you should take inventory of your values and integrity that would allow you to come to a public message board and brag about a fantasy modeling and acting career that may or may not exist, and say such hateful things about a woman you don’t even know. As for me, mine are intact; they allow me to call out people like you who have such a cruel spirit. You know, KM, kindness would have been just as easy. Think about it next time you start writing.

How much does this couple have to endure from the press?? When is a story considered too sensitive or lacking in enough facts to print? What source is considered so remote as to be unreliable? It seems there are no limits. I have nothing but admiration for Brad and Angelina, despite a public hungry for Ange’s blood and paparazzi only too happy to find/create it, they are still going strong. I pray their children are all healthy and happy and if there was a problem they would have the most loving, protective parents.
The media has become the whacko, not to be trusted.

Enough commented on May 02 10 at 7:39 am

The twins do have a sorts-syndromey look about them in some photos, but if I were being randomly photographed 24/7 people would come to all sorts of tabloidesque conclusions. Shiloh looks like a tom-boy in her haircut and missing tooth but…lesbian? what…is she kissing girls on the lips at the playground? what?

Janine commented on May 02 10 at 1:41 pm

I know that many of you are simply airing your disgust at the papparazzi and National Enquirer’s exploitation of the Jolie-Pitt children. I, too, think it is beyond low to discuss the children of public figures in the media. With that said, however, there is still a great misunderstanding about Down syndrome today.

People with Down syndrome are capable, worthy, and beautiful. Researchers are making great strides in treatments. Scientists at Stanford believe they will be able to improve cognitive functioning.

Due to higher expectations, inclusive schools, and stronger education laws like IDEA and NCLB, more and more individuals with Down syndrome are receiving a quality education. Many make the honor roll. Many are now attending college and obtaining quality employment. There are many young self-advocates who travel the U.S. as speakers, work in fulfulling jobs, lobby the legislature for better laws, drive, and live happy, ordinary, “normal” lives.

People with Down syndrome can and do marry.
The days of institutionalization are over. Children with Down syndrome live in their communities with their families, and attend their neighborhood schools.

A study last year found that families with a child with DS have a lower divorce rate than all other marriages. Further, there are ongoing studies to corroborate a 2003 Austrialian study which reported that siblings of individuals with Down syndrome are more empathic and caring than siblings of typically-developing siblings.

Finally, there are countless anecdotal stories and first-person accounts about the joy and love children with Down syndrome bring to their families. Our family is but one example. We have 3 girls. Our middle daughter, who is 6, has Down syndrome. She is silly, sweet, energetic, and bright. She is absolutely stunning, and has been included in 2 calendars, magazine ads, and a book. She loves swimming and playing outside. Her sisters adore her and vice versa. Sometimes they fight. Sometimes she gets in trouble — just like her siblings. Her older sister sticks up for her friends and has an appreciation of diversity and individual differences. My husband and I are more patient now. She has taken us down a path we never imagined, and our lives are richer for it.

Are there some health issues associated with Down syndrome? Sure. 40 to 50% will be born with heart issues. But 50% will not. And – the recent strides in the field mean that most medical issues are correctible through surgery or medication. What health issues do we face now? Our daughter with Down syndrome gets frequent sinus infections and has reflux. But then again, so do I.
Are there therapy appointments? Sure. But Early Childhood Intervention programs provide home-based therapy for free or on a sliding-scale basis based on the parent’s income.

My intent is not to attack anyone, but to spread awareness and debunk all the myths and fear that still surround Down syndrome. I’d love for everyone to stop and take a long hard look at the way we, as a society, treat those with disabilities. Like you and me, they want and deserve a little R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

Lori commented on May 03 10 at 11:46 am

I don’t think that they have DS. ut, they do look different. Have you noiced how people with DS children have to incessantly brag about how much they love their child anyway?

Minnie commented on May 03 10 at 6:51 pm

The twins have severe allergies. Their noses run and get stuffy, and their eyes are often irritated. That’s why they stayed inside sp much after birth. If they were Downs, they would have the clubby feet, etc. They don’t.

kissi commented on May 03 10 at 10:20 pm

Lord the level of ignorance on this page makes me sick! I am 100 percent sure Knox does not have Down syndrome. He has NO features at all to suggest he does. If Vivienne had Down syndrome as commited to causes as what her parents are I am sure they would be championing the NDSC.

Lo commented on May 04 10 at 11:38 am

Since Palin only has one -Ms Jolie should definately run for President or vice president next time around

alice wilson commented on May 04 10 at 8:43 pm

If the twins do have DS, so what? They are so blessed to have parents who have so much love and the means to see that these two special ANGELS are raised to reach their full potential. And the parents are so lucky that GOD blessed them with them! DS children are the most beautiful, and loveable, they are a true joy. Now why not leave them alone!!

RC commented on May 05 10 at 8:20 pm

It’s Vivienne who appears to have Down Syndrome, so it’s not surprising Angelina-the-baby-collector would appear with Knox, instead. As for Suri, I doubt she is any relation to Tom Cruise. Pretty sure Kate was already preggo when he married her.

Shelly commented on May 07 10 at 5:59 am

There aren’t more down syndrome babies because older women have less babies, it’s because they have a higher chance of having chromosomal abnormalities in eggs the older a woman gets.

Katie commented on May 07 10 at 8:35 pm

In my medical observed opinion, the twin girl, has features that resemble downs, but this does not in any way mean that she infact has it. Honestly it wouldnt matter if she did, she would still get the love and attention that is required of a toddler.

Amber commented on May 10 10 at 12:51 pm

It’s the girl, Vivienne, who looks like a Down syndrome baby.

becky ruff commented on Jul 11 10 at 11:55 pm

Downs or not, these children inherited NONE of their parents genes in terms of looks. The twins are not very attractive.

Jill commented on Aug 28 10 at 5:11 am

the twins look like they have Downs Syndrome but so does Shiloh. It may be that the Jolie-Pitt mix does not produce very attractive children. That doesn’t mean they won’t grow up to be beautiful. Sophia Loren once said she was an ugly duckling as a child, well look at her now! My own daughter was not very attractive when she was little but has grown into a real beauty. If Shiloh or the twins do have Downs Syndrome, who cares.

MaryAnne commented on Oct 21 10 at 9:04 am

I’ve always thought the girl twin has downs syndrome features. Her forehead area seems large also and usually you saw her wearing a hat. Her brother appears sickly, there is something in the eyes. If they have anything it is most likely a very mild form as they are walking etc. They are both beautiful children whether or not this is true. Shiloh does NOT have Downs and doesn’t even look like she does as someone implied. At the end of the day, it’s not our business and their parents love them regardless. I think the fact that they were not photographed often like Shiloh was and the other kids, people started suspecting there was a reason. If they have some type of syndrome, it will eventually be revealed.

WHOA! Since when is Down syndrome a DISEASE?!?!?!? WHO THE HECK WROTE THIS ARTICLE AND WHAT MORON ALLOWED IT TO BE PUBLISHED AS SUCH???

Caryn commented on Nov 24 10 at 4:53 pm

Boy, the American people are really becoming mean and nasty. Envy seems to be the ideology of a consumer society who is taught to envy and hate successful folks as Jolie and Pitt. Wow . . no wonder the rest of the world thinks Americans are dumb and ugly. I think they are neither . . just mean spirited. Very mean
