Rielle Hunter to Oprah: I Didn’t Wreck Edwards’ Marriage
Rielle Hunter, the mistress of the now-ostracized John Edwards who was running for the Democratic presidential nomination during their affair, sat down with Oprah Winfrey and says she did not ruin the marriage between Edwards and his wife Elizabeth.
“Absolutely not,” Hunter, who has a daughter Frances Quinn with Edwards, said when asked if she was a home wrecker. “It’s not my experience that a third party wrecks a home. You can’t steal someone else’s husband. [People are] not property.” Hunter says she still loves “Johnny” (um, yes, she calls him Johnny throughout the interview). Other highlights:
Hunter said the notion that the Edwards had an ideal marriage was a myth. “A lot of people bought into the myth of the marriage, the Edwards’ marriage as being a storybook story and it was so perfect and so wonderful and I destroyed it. It fits the two-dimensional story line.”
She also admitted that the two never practiced safe sex or used birth control; that she regrets the photo shoot she did for GQ magazine, calling it an “ego move”; and that she believes Edwards still loves her. “It’s my experience that he loves me.”
