Kate Gosselin: Putting her Life at Risk?
In the latest Jon and Kate news, it’s been widely reported that, upon returning home from her belated Dancing With the Stars loss, Kate Gosselin hit the spa for tanning and a pedicure.
Tanning, Kate? Really? What is this, 1986?
Look, you can debate whether or not celebrities owe it to their fans to set a good example. Or whether they owe it to their kids. But when it comes to cancer-causing behaviors, we’d like to see stars — the kinds of stars who are followed 24-hours-a-day by the press — refrain.
It’s unclear whether Kate was using a tanning bed or if she opted for a spray-on glow. The spas in her hometown of Reading, Penn. offer both. If she used the bed, it’s especially distressing. First, she’s putting her health (and, in fact, her life) in danger, and she’s the mom of eight kids. Second, she’s sending a signal to her fans that tanning beds are okay. And you know what? Ten out of ten dermatologists will tell you that they’re not. Unless you want to tempt melanoma. If that’s the case, then go ahead.
And if she’ opted for the totally-safe spray on tan? She’s not endangering her health. But she’s still sending the message that tan skin is better than pale skin. It’s a message that will likely encourage Kate-watchers to hit the sun themselves this summer. Can’t we all just put a little bronzer on our cheeks and celebrate being whatever color we were born?
So hereby issue a cease-and-desist order to Kate Gosselin: Kate, cease and desist the tanning. Please. It looks fake, anyway.
