Steve Irwin’s Daughter Stars in Free Willy
11 year-old Bindi Irwin is truly following in her father’s footsteps. Not only is she the host of her very own nature show, Bindi the Jungle Girl, on Discovery Kids, but now she’s swimming with the over-sized marine mammals in Free Willy: Escape From Pirate’s Cove.
Fortunately — especially in the wake of recent, tragic Sea World events — the actress didn’t actually work with a real whale during the filming. While living on the edge may be embedded in the Irwin genes, 11 is a teeny bit young to start playing Russian roulette with wild animals (though Bindi might prefer it that way).
Says Bindi:
“We don’t want to ruin the magic for the kids, but we didn’t use a real whale. And I feel lost without animals!”
“It was so much fun. I told my mom I’d love to do a movie one day, and when Free Willy came along, I said ‘yes’ right away.”
She adds, “They’re not just action-packed family fun, but they really have a message. You can learn something from watching them.”
Oddly enough (or maybe not), it sounds like Bindi would feel more comfortable working with a real live orca. Of course, he dad was Steve Irwin, so that might make sense.
