“Parenthood” Debuts Tonight on NBC
“Parenthood,” a new television drama based on the 1989 star-studded film directed by Ron Howard, premieres on NBC tonight at 10:00 pm Eastern. And the critics — a lot of them anyway — have high hopes for the series although history shows that film-to-tv adaptations fail more often than not. ”Parenthood” stars, among others, Lauren Graham, Peter Krause, Craig T. Nelson, Bonnie Bedelia and Dax Shepard with Howard and partner Brian Grazer serving as executive producers.
Here’s what the critics are saying:
Tim Goodman of the San Francisco Chronicle: It manages to be poignant and funny without becoming ridiculously soapy and larded with cliches. Better yet, it deftly touches on an impressive array of emotions that families go through – from the grandparents to the grandkids – and the writing, acting and directing in those scenes are stellar.
Mary McNamara of the Los Angeles Times: Though filled with far more tender and often tear-jerking moments than actual laughs, the first hour of “Parenthood” seems a solid and steady enough vehicle for such a brilliant cast.
Alessandra Stanley of the New York Times: “Parenthood,” with its polished scripts and beautifully shot exteriors, seems like a last gasp of television past.
David Hinckley of the New York Daily News: “Parenthood” is liberally spiced with humor, and like all Ron Howard productions, it also has regular moments designed to make our hearts feel all toasty. But other parts aren’t funny at all for the large Braverman family around which the show revolves.
And here is an interesting article on how the show differs from the film on which it is based. Tune in and tell us what you think.
