Alexander McQueen Dead: Mother’s Death Caused Depression and Suicide? (PHOTO)
Iconic fashion designer Alexander McQueen was found dead in his London home Thursday morning, and there is speculation that his alleged suicide came on the heels of a depression caused by his mother’s death. Hollywood celebrity stylist George Blodwell, who has known the designer for many years, reveals in an exclusive interview why he thinks McQueen took his own life.
“I’m totally shocked,” Blodwell tells the DishRag. “I only just found out. All I know is that he lived and breathed to make his mother proud of him. Everything he did was done to please her, like a ‘Look mommy, look what I did.’ He was very, very attached to her. And when she died last week, I think he felt, ‘what’s the use of anything anymore.’”
McQueen’s mother, Joyce passed away on February 2. The next day he announced it on Twitter. “RIP mumxxxxxxxxxxxxxx,” he said. And a few minutes later: “But life must go on!!!!!!!!!”
In 2004 McQueen and his mother were interviewed by the UK’s Guardian and their close bond was evident:
Joyce: What is your most terrifying fear?
Alexander: Dying before you.
Joyce: Thank you, son. What makes you proud?
Alexander: You.
Almost three years ago to the day McQueen also lost his close friend Isabella Blow to suicide. She was credited with discovering McQueen while he was a design student and introduced him to the fashion world.
