The  skipper of the Cornelia Marie suffered a stroke two weeks ago but recent reports indicated he was showing signs of improvement. After the stroke he was placed in a medically induced coma to reduce brain swelling and awoke last week. He reportedly died in the hospital.

Harris’ sons Jake and Josh, who worked as deckhands on the Cornelia Marie, issued the following statement:

“It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our dad — Captain Phil Harris. Dad has always been a fighter and continued to be until the end. For us and the crew, he was someone who never backed down. We will remember and celebrate that strength. Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and prayers.”

The Discovery Channel released this statement:

“Discovery mourns the loss of dear friend and colleague Captain Phil Harris. He was more than someone on our television screen. Phil was a devoted father and loyal friend to all who knew him. We will miss his straightforward honesty, wicked sense of humor and enormous heart.  We share our tremendous sadness over this loss with the millions of viewers who followed Phil’s every move. We send our thoughts and prayers to Phil’s sons Josh and Jake and the Cornelia Marie crew.”

Our thoughts go out to Harris’ family and friends.

Comments: What comment can I make that will express my true sadness at the passing of Captain Phil Harris… He was my favorite Captain and I cheered him on in every episode of Deadliest Catch. I was and still am a huge fan of ‘Deadliest Catch’ but it was Captain Phil all the way for me. I loved the relationship he had with Jake & josh as each one of them joined his crew to walk in thier Father’s footsteps. The ups & downs of parenting for a father, were played out in an honest and sometimes hilarious way on board the Cornelia Marie and every viewer was invited to watch and learn as this strong bashful man took each son in turn from boy to man.
Of all the Captains, Phil shared his life with us in the rawest openest way possible and we watched in his successes, failures, hard times and good times. We walked with him through troubles with his crew and troubles with his ship, trouble with his sons and then trouble with his health and with his brave comeback to fight again and we couldn’t help but cheer for this giant of a man.
The ‘Deadliest Catch’ wont be so easy to watch now, I’ll miss Captain Phil every step of the way… But I hope it continues and we can watch as Jake and Josh take thier place at the helm and try to walk in such big shoes. I know that Jake and Josh will have the support and guidance of thier Father’s friends in becoming a fishing team. And like Sig & Edgar Hanson, Johnathan & Andy Hilstrand, Keith & Monty Colburn, Josh & Jake Harris can take thier place as Brothers fight and winning against the Bering Sea…
All my best wishes and prayers go to the Harris Family, his loved ones, his crew and the many millions of us fans that loved and respected the Captain of the Cornelia Marie, Captain Phil Harris.

I have not seen the very last episode it has not been played in Canada. Josh, Jake of course their is no words to say to ease the pain. I do find comfort for the boys that he loved were not on the boat with those big waves never knew what their future might have been. Stay strong.
