Are Ellen And Portia Ready For A Family?
Ellen DeGeneres opened up to Katie Couric in two in-depth interviews — one running in Glamour Magazine, the other a series of video segments running on Katie’s new site, @KatieCouric. The two women chatted about the requisite topics du jour – Ellen’s coming out, her marriage and of course her new stint as an American Idol judge. But when Katie asked the “are you and Portia thinking about having kids?” question, Ellen’s response caught Katie (and this viewer) off guard.
Perhaps because children ( including my 9 year old son Owen ) seem to adore Ellen, I simply assumed that she would adore them as well and want a few of her own. But while she handles little ones on her show with ease and warmth, her answer to Katie’s query made it crystal clear that starting a new family with blushing bride Portia was not in the cards.
While she didn’t necessarily push back at Katie’s query, “Do you and Portia want to start a family?” her response sounded surprisingly defensive. “We have a family. Portia has a mom and I have a mom and a brother…” Katie recovered without skipping a beat and rephrased the question — giving Ellen a platform to share a very honest account of exactly why the DeGeneres/deRossi family will most likely remain a party of two. She talked about enjoying her freedom (ah don’t we all) but really stressed that the desire to remain child-free was driven by her desire not to share the love she gave – or received – with anyone other than her true love Portia.
