And this isn’t the first time Martin’s Idol dreams have been tainted by tragedy; she left the competition in 2007 after her father was murdered.

Martin’s mother Viola Brown Martin was on her way to visit Martin’s older sister the day after Christmas but never arrived. The family filed a missing person’s report, but on New Year’s Eve police in Glenwood, Ill., found Viola’s car in the Chicago suburbs in an unfamiliar neighborhood.

“We haven’t stopped looking,” Martin told People magzine. “We’ve been out in the cold, and before I left to go to Hollywood, we were looking. I think what hurts us the most was they found her car but they didn’t find her. It was abandoned in a forest preserve in the dark. We just want to know, what were you doing over there?”

Martin, who is the mother of a young daughter, is currently still battling it out at Hollywood week. She said there has been no news on her missing mom.

This is actually the third time for Martin making it to the Hollywood round of the AI competition; on her second try in 2008 she had to leave due to a court summons for a traffic ticket.
