Mo’Nique’s Emotional Acceptance Speech for Golden Globe Win for ‘Precious’ (VIDEO)
Actress and comedian Mo’Nique took home the first award of the evening at Sunday’s 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards. Mo’Nique won the award for best supporting actress in a drama for her role as Mary Lee Johnston, an abusive mother in “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire.”
In a moving acceptance speech, Mo’Nique reached out to victims of abuse. “I celebrate this award with all the Preciouses, with all the Marys,” she said. “I celebrate this award with every person that’s ever been touched. It’s now time to tell.”
Mo’Nique’s apparent lack of enthusiasm for her nomination and the Globes had been criticized in recent weeks when she seemed unwilling to campaign for the awards and didn’t show up for some of the movie’s festival screenings and premieres. But after winning the Critics Choice award Friday, her husband, Sidney Hicks, defended his wife.
“She’s the first woman of African-American descent to ever have a late-night TV show, she’s also a comedian,” Hicks said. “In conjunction with that, she’s a mother, she’s also a wife. She hasn’t been good at all of them, but she has been at some… She’d rather portray a bad mother in the movies than actually be one in real life.”

[...] Rain put a damper on the 67th annual Golden Globe Awards, but that didn’t stop stars from coming out in full force. Stylistas strutted their stuff down the red carpet shielded by umbrellas, with top fashion honors going to Glee star Lea Michele in her strapless, black Oscar de la Renta gown, Big Love actress, Ginnifer Goodwin in a short, cobalt blue dress, and Kate Winslett whose one-shoulder navy gown was form fitting the best way possible. Despite the weather, the show went off without a hitch, and highlights included a segment honoring legendary director, Martin Scorsese who received a special achievement award and an acceptance speech by Monique for her role in Precious that was a performance worthy of recognition in itself.
