Kate starts award season beauty bonanza off with a bang(s)!

Kate Gosselin wasn’t nominated for any of the upcoming tinsel town award shows, but she seems to have unofficially launched the award season’s beauty bonanza and put the spotlight on the pricey endeavor of getting read carpet ready in Hollywood.

There was a collective gasp across the blogosphere when it was revealed that Kate’s new look was courtesy of a full hair makeover, including cut, color and extensions  and cost a whopping $7000. Even Hollywood stylists and insiders were shocked at the price tag of Kate’s do: Neil Weisberg from the tony BH salon Neil George who boasts Reese Witherspoon, Heidi Klum and Nicole Ritchie on his client list, told us that a normal batch of extensions would run $2000-$3000 at the most and that you could even get a really good head of hair for $800. He did agree, however, that from now through the Academy Awards, tis the season to spend on tresses.

So what does it take to get celebrity hair red carpet ready? “Plenty.” says Neil. “And it’s not just a one day affair. We’ve had people coming in all week and we’ll see them in the salon next week as well to get their hair cut, their roots touched up and their highlights done.” The price for this prep work: $250 and up for a haircut with Neil; $300 and up for color by Neil’s partner in beauty crime, Amanda George. “When we won’t see nominees in the salon is on the awards day itself. We’ll usually be out doing a blow-dry or hairstyle in the privacy of the client’s own home.” The price for this door to door star treatment? $500 and up. Wow.

Neil shared a secret for how stars (and us regular folks) can keep the hairstyles they love looking better and lasting longer – something that can get them from blowdry to Louboutins clicking on the marble at the Beverly Hilton next Sunday for the festive Golden Globes night: Dry Shampoo (and his own brand of course)
