nicole keith and sunday rose 300x263 Nicole Kidman Says Her Daughter Knows Sign LanguageDoes your 18-month-old know sign language yet? Nicole and Keith’s little rug rat doesbaby sign language, anyway. I’m not sure what that is… but it sounds like it might come in handy during a silent moment in a crowded movie theater, or during the potty training process.

According to an interview during a PR event for Kidman’s latest film “Nine,” Sunday Rose is not only walking and talking, she’s somehow coordinated enough to use sign language. Although Sunday hears just fine, Nicole’s already helping Sunday broaden her horizons and “She’s picked it right up.”

Pretty cool, huh? Apparently, Nicole didn’t go into great detail on just what type of sign language Sunday was excelling in (American Sign Language, maybe?), but I doubt she was stonewalling like she did on those Scientology questions.

With tons of co-workers and entertainment bigwigs at the event, I imagine there were a lot of other interesting stuff to talk about. Still, “baby sign language?” What is that, exactly?

When my now 3 1/2 year old was 18 months old she started speech therapy because of a speech delay. The therapist taught her a few baby sign language signs & she picked them up right away & used them constantly – ‘more’, ‘eat’ & ‘book’ stand out in my memory.

There are tons of baby sign language book in the book stores. I really don’t think it’s that unusual. And for us, it was very helpful.

Baby sign language is the use of single signs (I recommend ASL signs for families in North America). Single signs or key signs are used for the main words in sentences, e.g., the nouns and verbs. This helps to put an emphasis on the main concepts. Say and sign the key words. Every parent should sign with their baby! Remember to sign the word as you say it and to use keys American Sign Language signs to narrate your child’s world! Keep on sharing! Seriously? You’ve never heard of “Baby Signs”? It’s based on ASL, and is very basic, but many, many parents are teaching their babies sign. I have 15-month old twins and they’ve been using signs for “eat”, “drink”, “more” and “bath” for months. It helps them from being frustrated when trying to communicate with us.
Good for Nicole!
