Uma Thurman Talks Parenting, “Motherhood”
How does a women like Uma Thurman balance her career as a movie star with her career as a mom? Apparently, that’s a question for the ages. Well, at least Uma got to explore the question in new flick Motherhood, where she plays Manhattan mom who struggles with the dilemma of modern mommy-hood.
Uma’s new film Motherhood is apparently getting rave reviews from mothers who have to face the day-to-day stretch to be all things to all those who depend on them. Uma and director Katherine Dieckmann sat down with the NYT to discuss why the film is such a hit with working and stay-at-home mothers.
Says Thurman:
“Parenting is something you can’t delegate. Yes, you can find help with the daily things, but that doesn’t release you from the guilt and anxiety and concern. Is there ever a time when putting your needs ahead of your children’s is acceptable? That is the overarching question.”
I never realized just how conflicted Uma felt about working after having her children Maya Ray, 11, and Levon, 7, with Ethan Hawke.
You might think that a husband, nannies, assistants, and a super-sized bankroll might help to take some of the bite out of leaving the kids while you go to work. According to Uma, it didn’t quite work that way.
“After my daughter was born I went back to work when she was a baby, and that freaked me out,” Thurman said. “I didn’t know how to do it, and it caused a lot of stress in my relationship (with Hawke) at the time. Work, baby, relationship – something was going to break. One had to get lost because I couldn’t manage all three…
That’s what motherhood does to your creative life. You look at the work in a devastatingly creative way. I still need to earn a living, and I need to take care of my children. It’s quite a dilemma for women.”
