Jude Law’s “Hamlet” Gets Panned By Critics
Jude won’t meet his weeks-old, DNA-test-confirmed daughter Sophia until his Broadway run of Hamlet ends in December, but at least the brilliant performance is worth it… OK, maybe not. Despite the fact that Jude has put his stagecraft in front of his fatherly duties, critics are not exactly giving him a standing ovation.
In fact, some are saying Jude should go meet his daughter, because the show might actually be better without his goofy hand gestures. From Ben Brantley’s review in the NY Times:
“If Hamlet talks about his mind, you can bet that Mr. Law will point to his forehead; when he mentions the heavens, his arm shoots straight up; and when the guy says his gorge rises, rest assured that he clutches at his stomach. If every actor were like Mr. Law, signed performances for the hard of hearing would be unnecessary.”
Combine that glowing praise with the one from Bloomberg’s John Simon, and you start to get the idea that Jude comes across better on film. From Bloomberg News:
“flashy, frequently jocular and unsubtle” performance in a play “aimed at neophyte audiences lured to the play not only by the star but with the added promise of a thriller liberally sprinkled with yocks.”
