Anne Heche Keeps Her Kids Away From Grandma
Anne Heche’s mom won’t be invited to Thanksgiving dinner anytime soon. The actress won’t let her children – Homer age 7 and Atlas age 5 months – meet their grandma because Heche’s mother “hates anything gay”.
After Heche’s dad – an evangelical Christian who was a closeted gay man – died of AIDS in the ‘80s, her mom became a member of Focus on the Family. The organization apparently believes that one can “overcome” being gay. Heche explained her reasoning for keeping her kiddies away from their grandmother:
“My mother’s had a very tragic life. Three of her five children are dead, and her husband is dead. That she is attempting to change gay people into straight people is, in my opinion, a way to keep the pain of the truth out. People wonder why I am so forthcoming with the truths that have happened in my life, and it’s because the lies that I have been surrounded with and the denial that I was raised in, for better or worse, bore a child of truth and love. My mother preaches to this day the opposite of that core of my life. It is no mistake that she still stands up against love. And one wonders why I’m not rushing to have her meet my children.”
If her mother had a “very tragic life”, wouldn’t the gift of grandchildren be a positive influence?

I think that giving somebody the chance to act right is the best you can do. I also think that she has let the differences between her and her mom decide for her kids. Maybe she will be different with them, if not then she can be sure that she is not good to them.
