Photo of a Young Brooke Sheilds – Child Pornography or Art?
Brooke Sheilds has been taken off the walls of the prestigious museum, the Tate Modern. What was she doing there in the first place? Looking provocative and perhaps a wee bit pornographic.
The Tate included a photo of Brooke in an exhibit called Pop Life: Art In A Material World. The piece was by Richard Prince and was a photogragh of a photograph originally taken by Garry Gross. The photo in question is of a 10-year-old Brooke, who’s oiled up, made up, naked and standing somewhat seductively in a bathtub. The original was actually commissioned by Brooke’s mom back in 1975 and at the time she signed the rights away to the images. Attempts to buy back the rights in 1981 were unsuccessful.
The photo called “Spiritual America” was hung in it’s own private room at the Tate, behind a closed door with a warning saying the piece inside was “challenging”. Sound a bit like the porn section of the local video store to me.
Although the piece has been exhibited in the United States (where it didn’t fall under child pornography), the British police are wrestling with whether it is art or porn. The exhibit has closed until a judgment can be made.
“If you are using a picture of a naked child to bring people to your exhibition, then you are exploiting that child. It’s as if they are using a 10-year-old girl for bait. I find it disturbing and they should be ashamed of themselves. And putting the picture in a room with a warning outside really is a magnet for pedophiles.”
I won’t post the steamy photo but here’s a cute innocent one from the same shoot.
