The actress admits that dating after the death of her ex Heath Ledger was fraught with problems. “The timing was impossible,” she says. “I thought falling in love again was the only thing that was going to save me from the pain. This erroneous idea: It just makes things more complicated.”

Williams and Ledger had a daughter together, Matilda, 3, and the actress says dating as a single mother contributed to the breakup with Jonze. “I obviously don’t know how to do it,” she says.

Jonze, who recently directed Where The Wild Things Are, first met Williams in 2007 when the two were working on the indie flick Synecdoche, New York.

Ledger died of an accidental overdose in 2008, and Williams reveals her struggle in the aftermath. “I was holding it together by a string and a paper clip in the fall and winter,” she says. “I didn’t know if I could keep it all together…You console yourself by saying it’s all a deepening process. But it’s weird. After the first year, the pain is less intense — it’s less immediate. But the magical thinking goes away too. And that’s a whole new reckoning.”
