Lucky Lev: Elton John Wants to Adopt Boy from Ukraine
Sir Elton John and his partner David Furnish are trying to find a way to adopt Lev, a 14-month-old boy from an orphanage in Ukraine. John, who once joked that he would never want to adopt because, “frankly, I refuse to breastfeed,” says that the little boy has “stolen his heart.”
John was at the orphanage with his AIDS foundation and had performed Circle of Life for the children there. At a press conference later he and Furnish were asked about adoption and John admitted to having a change of heart. “Having seen Lev today, I would love to adopt him. I don’t know how we do that but he has stolen my heart. And he has stolen David’s heart and it would be wonderful if we can have a home. I’ve changed my mind today.”
The couple may have several hurdles to overcome in the adoption because of the singer’s age of 62. British adoption laws state that the parent should be no older than retirement age when the child is 18, meaning that John would have to rely on Furnish who would be 63 when the child reaches 18.
John added that the death last week of his friend and keyboard player Guy Babylon was a factor in his decision. “What better opportunity to replace someone I lost with someone I can give a future to,” he said.
