Dr. Drew Says Pain Meds Caused DJ AM to Relapse into Addiction
Pain medications probably caused DJ AM, who died Friday at age 36, to relapse into addiction, says Dr. Drew Pinsky, an addiction specialist.
“It very slowly and subtly reawakens addiction,” Dr. Drew said over the weekend. “I’m not saying it was inappropriately prescribed. I’m saying he didn’t know the risks.”
Found dead in his apartment Friday night, Adam Goldstein (aka DJ AM) had prescription pills and a crack pipe in his NYC apartment, according to law enforcement. After his 2008 plane crash, in which he and Travis Barker very nearly died with the rest of the passengers, Goldstein started on anti-anxiety meds and, eventually, stronger stuff again.
The official word from the New York City Medical Examiners, of course, is that the autopsy results are “inconclusive.” They’re doing more tests, including toxicology, and that will take weeks.
Unofficially, though, DJ AM made no secret about his past addictions to coke and Ecstasy. In fact, he had an upcoming MTV reality show called “Gone Too Far,” which was going to be about his rehab. What’s going to happen with the show hasn’t yet been decided. But, um? No star? No show, I say.
